LSU Coach Lane Kiffin Heckled by Fans During Embarrassing Loss

Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was packed with celebrity guests for one of college football’s biggest showdowns. But by the end of Saturday’s game, LSU coach Lane Kiffin was left facing a deeply embarrassing defeat as Alabama cruised to victory.

First Lady Melania Trump was among those in attendance. Before kickoff, Kiffin walked toward Tiger Stadium alongside LSU alumni Shaquille O’Neal, Angel Reese, Livvy Dunne and Paul Skenes, with Hollywood actor Kevin Costner also joining the star-studded group.

For Kiffin, one of college football’s most polarizing personalities, the excitement quickly disappeared. Alabama produced a convincing 31-13 win, leaving LSU’s College Football Playoff hopes hanging by a thread.

As the defeat drew to a close, with LSU falling to 6-3 on the season, one supporter was heard directing an expletive at Kiffin from the stands at Tiger Stadium.

“Hey Lane, f*** you!” the fan shouted in a moment captured by the ABC broadcast.

LSU had entered the game ranked No. 14 in the country, and the loss has put its chances of reaching the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff in serious doubt ahead of next week’s meeting with Texas.

The home loss also extended Kiffin’s record as a head coach against Alabama to 0-6.

Melania Trump’s appearance in Baton Rouge prompted a major security operation as she announced a $5 million scholarship fund through her Fostering the Future initiative.

NBA great O’Neal and Reese first met at an LSU-Alabama game in 2022. The pair developed a close friendship before Reese went on to become a WNBA star.

Reese returned to LSU on Thursday night, watching her former women’s basketball team overwhelm Texas South 131-22 in a dominant performance.

Skenes, meanwhile, met Dunne during their time at LSU. She was a gymnast for the school, while he played baseball there.

They have since become one of the most recognizable couples in American sports and were back in Baton Rouge for the high-profile football matchup.

Dunne posted photos of her outfit and behind-the-scenes moments on social media. She was also seen speaking with Kiffin’s daughter, Landry, before the game.

The 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff had already become a talking point in Louisiana, with Kiffin questioning why the SEC matchup had not been scheduled as a traditional night game.

“It’s interesting that all of a sudden this year, for the first time ever since 2010, or first time since 2010, Alabama’s coming to LSU and not playing at night,” Kiffin said.

“So there’s a lot of people around here upset about it and complaining and stuff, and I said, ‘Well, you know, don’t think we got a lot of people around the SEC really rooting for LSU this year after what’s transpired.’”

Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer rejected the idea that the earlier kickoff had provided his team with any meaningful advantage.

DeBoer replied: “Well, I feel like we’re on the road, and so I’d rather play at home if I’m gonna have all the advantages.

“But yeah, with the earlier kick, is that what you’re asking? Yeah, I don’t even choose that, I guess. I don’t have any choice in that. It is what it is. We just gotta show up for the play.”

Saturday’s game was also the final scheduled meeting between LSU and Alabama until 2028, after the SEC moved away from staging the rivalry every year.

“Yeah, I mean, I think that’s just sad, and I understand, so I’m not being critical,” Kiffin said of the change. “All of them (decisions) probably really come down to money.

“Whether that’s the realignments, whether that’s the rivalries. And so, I think it’s all sad in general in the big picture of things, you know, that money drives to make such great traditions and rivalries.

“And there’s really good things that have changed in college football over the years. But there’s also a lot that I think myself and a lot of people wish that they were the way that they were. (Keeping) rivalries and conferences the same,” Kiffin added.

“And so, unfortunately, it’s where we are that really doesn’t seem like much is going to be protected when it comes to TV contracts and money and other people’s ideas.”
