A gardener has been taken into custody after a man was found dead and a woman was found with serious injuries at a home north of Brisbane.
Officers were met with a “confronting” scene when the pair in their 70s were found with serious head injuries at a Burpengary East home this morning, Detective Inspector David Harbison said.
A 26-year-old man from Boondall has been taken into custody and a homicide investigation has been launched.
“Police do not believe there is any threat to the public,” Queensland Police said in a statement.
Harbison said early investigations suggested the 26-year-old was “on and about the premises conducting some gardening work” when “a dispute of some type has broken out”.
He also said police would investigate whether weapons or implements were used in the alleged attacks.
“As I said it’s very early days in the investigation so we don’t have the full facts yet,” Harbison said.
“I’ll stress that this is not a domestic and family violence incident”.
Harbison said police did not believe the man in custody was previously known to the couple, who are yet to be formally identified by police.
Support will be offered to the police officers who attended the welfare check.
“Unfortunately this is policing and it’s happening too often,” Harbison said.
“Our first responders will seek some help for them and make sure they’re OK and not too traumatised.
“The same goes for the QAS (Queensland Ambulance Service) and the first responders that attend all of these incidents.”
Police are asking members of the public who were in the area between 9am and 9.50am to come forward if they have information or dashcam footage.
