Key Points
  • Mulch that might contain asbestos has been sent to ‘about 25’ Queensland businesses.
  • Asbestos was detected in a compost stockpile at company NuGrow’s Ipswich site.
  • Authorities are working to assess any risks to the public or NuGrow workers.
Compost that might contain asbestos has been sent to more than 20 Queensland businesses.
Authorities are in order to test it after asbestos was detected in a compost stockpile at company NuGrow’s Ipswich site, west of Brisbane.

How many businesses are being tested?

Queensland Premier Steven Miles said NuGrow Ipswich had provided “about 25” businesses with mulch that might contain the hazardous material.

“Agencies are contacting those businesses to identify where the mulch could be and to organise for it to be tested,” he told reporters in Cairns.

“I will make that list public just as soon as we can.

“We’re also setting up a hotline so that anyone who is concerned that they might have been exposed to the mulch can call and get advice directly from experts.”

Where was the asbestos found?

The Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI) said a “small amount” of asbestos had been found in the NuGrow Ipswich stockpile during a joint inspection.
NuGrow listed more than 20 businesses when they were ordered to provide information on where material had been taken off the Ipswich site in the past 30 days.

DESI said it was working with authorities to assess any risks to the public or NuGrow workers.

“We will immediately inform the community if any health risks are identified,” a DESI statement said.
NuGrow has been prohibited from disturbing the contaminated stockpile and ordered to take measures to prevent asbestos from being released into the air.

DESI said the site would be assessed and tested along with the air quality.

Who’s at risk?

NuGrow returned a positive result when more than 20 landfill operations, transfer stations, landscape suppliers, composters and mulch suppliers across southeast Queensland were inspected in response to a major Sydney asbestos contamination.

DESI is still waiting on sampling and analysis results for about half of the southeast sites.
The asbestos inspection has now been expanded to sites outside the state’s southeast.
NuGrow on Wednesday said a “low level” of asbestos had been identified in a soil sample taken from the Ipswich facility on 20 February.
“There is currently no evidence to suggest that people who may have come in contact with this material are at risk,” it said in a statement.

The company said testing detected “two fibres of bonded asbestos” in a sample taken from a soil stockpile at the facility.

“No respirable (airborne particles) asbestos was found in all samples and all other samples taken from the site were clear of asbestos,” it said.
“The level of asbestos concentration found in the positive sample is extremely low, equivalent to what might be detected in a sample of sand, mulch or soil taken from any beach, garden, park or other public space.”
NuGrow said it was working closely with authorities.

“The safety of NuGrow’s staff, clients and the broader community is our utmost priority at this time, as always,” the statement said.
