Most of Australia gets a long weekend this week courtesy of a centuries-old British tradition.

The King’s Birthday public holiday will be celebrated on Monday, June 9, in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory.

Queensland and Western Australia mark the occasion later in the year.

But rainy and windy conditions will dampen celebrations in south-eastern states.

Temperatures will fall to the negatives in Canberra, the lowest in the country, and hover around the low teens in Melbourne and Adelaide.

Here’s what the weather will be like around the country this weekend.

Sydney will stay mostly mild and cloudy through the weekend, with tops of 19 on tomorrow, 17 on Sunday, and 16 on Monday.

It could get as cold as eight degrees on the public holiday.

There is a slight chance of showers throughout all three days.

Top temperatures will be 15 tomorrow, 12 on Sunday and 13 on Monday.

It’s likely to be raining throughout the weekend, with up to 9mm forecast tomorrow before lighter showers on Sunday and Monday.

Adelaide is facing a similar weekend to Melbourne.

Temperatures will top out at 17 degrees tomorrow, before dipping to 13 on Sunday, and 16 on Monday.

And it will be another rainy three days, again with the heaviest falls of up to 25mm expected tomorrow.

The days will also be mostly sunny, with some clouds on Monday.

Despite not getting the public holiday on Monday, Brisbane is looking forward to some decent weekend weather.
