An Adelaide mother who admitted to criminally neglecting her six-year-old daughter, who later died, has been jailed for 17 years.

In 2022, Crystal Hanley’s daughter, Charlie, tragically passed away due to severe malnutrition, which led to the failure of her vital organs.

At the time of her death, Charlie weighed a mere 18 kilograms and was infested with lice, highlighting the neglect she suffered.

Her final days were spent in appalling conditions, and despite being of school age, she was never enrolled in an educational institution.

In the period leading up to her death, Hanley deceived concerned neighbors by falsely claiming that Charlie had received medical attention.

Instead, the court revealed that Hanley exhibited a “callous disregard” for her daughter’s worsening health, even going so far as to make light of Charlie’s inability to walk.

The judge told Hanley she failed as a mother at the most fundamental level.

She pleaded guilty to the criminal neglect of Charlie and two other children.

Hanley kept her head bowed as she was sentenced to 17 years this morning.

She must serve at least 12 years before she can apply for release.
