Queensland Police have charged a 34-year-old Mt Isa man with grievous bodily harm after a 17-month-old was presented to hospital earlier this year with critical head injuries.

When the man appears in court next year, Mount Isa Detectives will allege a domestic violence incident took place on 30 January 2023, the same day the then-17 month old child was presented to Mt Isa hospital.

Nearly twelve months later, the 34-year-old man was arrested following what Queensland police said was “tragic circumstances”.

Since his arrest, the man has been held in police custody, and will appear before Mount Isa Magistrates court on February 14 next year.

The child was just 17 months old when they were taken to Mount Isa Hospital with critical head injuries on January 30 this year.

Mount Isa’s Police Child Protection and Investigation Unit started their investigation into the circumstances of the child’s injuries that day.

They were assisted by specialist detectives from the Child Trauma Unit.

Police did not say who first brought the child to the Mount Isa Hospital on January 30.

The relationship between the 34-year-old man and the child has also not been disclosed.

Mount Isa’s Detective Senior Sergeant Nathaniel Carlton praised the investigating detectives, and said it was a great showcase of their commitment to investigate any incident in the community.

“This result is only achieved by a fantastic collaborative effort between Mount Isa and specialist officers in such tragic circumstances,” he said.

“We will continue to do whatever it takes to investigate and hold those accountable that place children in the community in harm’s way.”
