When he didn’t return home two weekends ago his family filed a missing person report on March 19.

Banks’ car was found by police at the start of the Starlight Trail at Wattle Ridge, near Bargo, on March 21.

It was believed he was bushwalking to Ahearn lookout or Emmets Flat campground area, about an hour south of Campbelltown.

“Darren loves bushwalking, he’s camping most of his time… He’s an experienced camper,” Detective Inspector Andrew Mackay said.

Mackay said he had equipment with him and limited food supplies.

“We haven’t been able to locate any sight of him apart from his vehicle, which was located last Thursday,” he said.

“He was only expected to be away for one night.”

Mackay said the hike they believe he was doing “wasn’t too far into the bush” and it was probably only an overnight hike.

Banks was believed to be in “very good health” before he began the walk.

Officers have his mobile phone but it’s believed he didn’t take it with him as there is no reception in the area.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner, and thanked the community for their assistance.
