Both Melbourne and Sydney have recorded a population growth surge, according to fresh data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The largest increase was seen in Melbourne, which surged by 167,500 people in 2022-23, with the suburb of Rockbank in the state’s west seeing the largest growth.

Sydney added 146,700 residents, followed by Perth with 81,300 and finally Brisbane with 81,200.

Urban areas and developing suburbs were among the locations that recorded a population boom in Victoria.

Rockbank and Mount Cottrell, about 28km from the CBD welcomed 4,300 people residents.

Nearby suburb Fraser Rise and Mickleham, in the state’s north both saw a jump of 3,400 residents.

Further towards the city, and Clayton North along with Notting Hill were among the highest growth rates, up 19 per cent. 

Melbourne currently has about 100,000 fewer residents than Sydney, but social researcher and demographer Mark McCrindle previously told 9News he was confident Melbourne “will take the crown in a few years”.

It was a similar trend seen in New South Wales, with the largest growth occurring in Sydney’s outer west.

Greater Sydney increased by 2.8 per cent, while the state experienced a 1 per cent rise.

Marsden Park – Shanes Park and Box Hill – Nelson, both about 49km from Sydney welcomed 3,900 people each.

Although every capital city experienced net overseas migration gain, the largest was recorded in Sydney followed by Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.

Brisbane and Perth were the only capitals to have net internal migration gains.
