The lawyer killed in an alleged hit-and-run in Sydney yesterday was just metres away from the home he shared with his partner when he was struck.
Despite attempts to resuscitate him, he was unable to be revived.
9News understands he was returning from a night out when he was allegedly hit just metres from the front door of the home he lived in with his girlfriend.
Neighbours told 9News they heard a loud bang or thud followed by a car alarm around the same time the incident was reported.
Police today established a strike force to investigate the unidentified driver and released CCTV footage of a white SUV to the public as a renewed appeal for information.
East was born in New Zealand, studied at Harvard University in the United States and had recently moved to Australia.
He worked for law firm Arnold Bloch Leibler in Sydney’s CBD, who today described him as a “highly talented lawyer and popular and valued member of the firm, whose loss will be deeply felt” in an email to staff.
“The partners expressed heartfelt condolences to Mitch’s parents, his partner and many close friends, both within and outside of Arnold Bloch Leibler,” the email read.
East had an extensive career in law and was offered full scholarships for three of the world’s most respected universities – Cambridge, New York and Harvard.
He made his mark working on the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Christchurch terrorist attack in 2020.
New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed consular officials were aware of East’s death.
“We extend our sympathies to their family at this difficult time,” a spokesperson said.
