Stan released the first official trailer for their six-part Original drama series The Tattooist of Auschwitz on Thursday.

The show is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by New Zealand author Heather Morris and is inspired by a real-life ‘love story’.

Premiering on the streaming platform on May 2, the trailer reveals the story of two people who met and fell in love at a concentration camp during the Holocaust.

The trailer begins with Heather (Melanie Lynskey) listening to an older Lali Sokolov (Harvey Keitel) recounting his experiences at Auschwitz.

‘You’re looking for someone to write your life story,’ Heather says.

‘This is a love story,’ Lali responds.

As the trailer begins to show harrowing clips of Lali’s life in the concentration camp, he continues to say: ‘This is what it was every morning.

‘Every time I open my eyes, I am still there. But I found something there. Someone.’

The series follows young Lali (Jonah Hauer-King), a Slovakian Jew deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942 where over a million Jews were murdered.

Shortly after arriving, he is made to be one of the tattooists charged with inking identification numbers onto prisoners’ arms.

One day, he meets Gita Furman (Anna Próchniak) when she is brought to him to have an identification number tattooed on her arm.

The pair experience love at first sight, and so begins their courageous, unforgettable story as the trailer sees the pair attempt to keep their love a secret.

Under constant guard from a volatile Nazi SS officer Baretzki (Jonas Nay), Lali and Gita became determined to keep each other alive.

‘We must keep living. Whatever it takes,’ Gita says. ‘Love still exists. Even here.’

Around 60 years later, a recently widowed Lali (Keitel) meets novice writer Heather following the death of his love, and he finds the courage to tell the world his story.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz premieres Thursday, May 2 only on Stan.
