Another three Melbourne parks being checked for potential asbestos

Three new parks in Melbourne’s westhave been identified as potentially being contaminated with asbestos.

Dennis Reserve in Williamstown, Fitzgerald Square Reserve in Sunshine West and Altona Coastal Park are now being investigated as potential asbestos exposure sites.

It means ten parks are now under investigation across two council areas since the weekend.

Victoria’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) said they were investigating material “reported as likely to contain traces of asbestos in garden beds near a bowls club” at the reserve in Williamstown.

The reserve in Sunshine West had samples taken and will undergo “priority testing”, the EPA said.

In Altona, the EPA has extended their existing testing to include the new site.

“Under existing remedial notices Hobsons Bay City Council is required to report to EPA on the sources of mulch received over the past 18 months,” EPA said in a statement.

“EPA is also working with Hobsons Bay City Council on potential sources of mulch at the parks in Altona North, which is believed to have been delivered as far back as 2017.”

Test results from the weekend’s investigations in Hobsons Bay City Council and Merri-Bek City Council are expected to be received this afternoon.
