In light of recent developments, former US deputy director of national intelligence, Beth Sanner, has weighed in on the current state of the ceasefire following new military strikes by the US against Iran. Despite these actions, Sanner maintains that the truce is still intact.
Speaking with CNN, Sanner elaborated on the strategic nature of these operations. “One might interpret these strikes as a defensive measure, particularly given the looming threat to maritime navigation,” she noted. She drew parallels to previous US actions earlier in the week, which were prompted by the detection of Iranian forces laying mines in the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
Sanner also suggested that the strikes could serve as a strategic message to Iran. Reflecting on past confrontations, she recalled, “During the last exchange, Iran managed to destroy a $30 million Reaper drone along with other US assets.”
In the current context, however, Sanner observed a notable difference. “This time around, it seems no US assets were taken out by Iran. The real question now is how Iran will respond to this latest development,” she added, hinting at the ongoing tension and strategic maneuvering between the two nations.
“This time, there probably wasn’t anything they took down from the US, so let’s see what they do next,” she said.
Sanner (pictured above) said the rhetoric from Iran about controlling the shipping lane, similar statements in the country’s official media, and actions like mining the strait, showed one thing in particular.
“They are hanging tough on this, and this is completely contrary to what President Trump said in today’s Cabinet meeting,” she said.
