At about 2am on Thursday, July 27, police were called to Broughton Street in Canterbury, to reports of gunfire.
They found a man with gunshot wounds, who died at the scene.
The man has since been identified as 28-year-old Ferenc “David” Stemler.
Police said today that Stemler had links to organised crime, however, he was not a “major player” in the underworld.
”We’re not making any suggestion on his involvement in organised crime in particular, he is a local man, he grew up with a number of people in the area,” Detective Inspector Virginia Gorman of the State Homicide Squad said.
Stemler was friends with two victims of a believed gangland shooting in Marrickville last year, Gorman also said.
At about 7am yesterday, detectives arrested a pregnant 23-year-old woman in Wetherill Park.
She was charged with murder and refused bail.
She appeared in court yesterday, where she was formally refused bail to next appear on April 18.
Police allege that she is involved in organised crime, and was previously “completely unknown” to investigators.
At about 9.40am today, a 27-year-old man in a correctional facility was arrested.
Police expect to charge him with murder.
Police said the man and pregnant woman are known to each other.
More arrests are expected to be made.
