Julia Roberts has been one of Hollywood’s most popular leading ladies since the late 80s. After all, appearing in movies such as Mystic Pizza, Pretty Woman, and My Best Friend’s Wedding earned her the title of the queen of rom-coms. Plus, over the years, she’s proven she can do it all, from drama to comedy.

Throughout her career, fans and the media have not only praised Robert’s acting abilities, but also her beauty. Ever since her big break in Mystic Pizza, Roberts has made it into People Magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People in The World” list more than ten times! Today, the actress is still praised for her beauty and for aging gracefully.

But even someone as beautiful as Julia Roberts can’t avoid social media trolls. A couple of years ago, the Pretty Woman star decided to quit social media altogether after a photo she posted of herself and her niece Emma Roberts received a lot of negative comments.

Like many other Hollywood stars, Julia Roberts considered joining social media to connect with friends and fans in 2018. However, she quickly reconsidered this decision after a photo her niece, Emma Roberts, posted on Instagram received tons of negative comments.

“Something did happen recently on my niece Emma’s Instagram that I think taught me a lot about what it’s like being a young person in today’s society,” Roberts told Oprah in a 2018 interview for Harper’s Bazaar. “One weekend morning Emma slept over, and we got up and were having tea and playing cards and having this beautiful morning, and then a couple of days later, she posted a picture of us,” Roberts recalled.

Emma posted the picture on Instagram to give the world a little glimpse into what her relationship with her famous aunt, Julia Roberts, is really like. Neither of them expected the photo to get so many negative comments. “The number of people who felt absolutely required to talk about how terrible I looked in the picture—that I’m not aging well, that I look like a man, why would she even post a picture like this when I look that terrible!” Julia explained.

The actress admitted that she felt hurt by these negative comments. “I was amazed at how that made me feel,” she revealed. “I’m a 50-year-old woman and I know who I am, and still my feelings got hurt. I was sad that people couldn’t see the point of it, the sweetness of it, the absolute shining joy of that photo. I thought, ‘What if I was 15?’” Roberts pointed out that social media can be extremely toxic for younger people.

Ultimately, the Pretty Woman star was able to make the most out of this terrible experience.

“I was so happy that happened because I had this whole new glimpse into a way of living that I didn’t get at all,” she explains. “You have to go through things to understand them, and this was just a little paper cut of what can really go on with social media.”

Julia Roberts joined Instagram in 2018 but deleted her account after tons of social media users mocked her appearance in a photo posted by her niece, Emma Roberts. In a recent interview, Roberts explained why she hasn’t given social media another try.

“Listen, I don’t have my head in the sand. I’m aware of the different outlets, however you label them,” the actress said in an interview for InStyle magazine (via Yahoo Entertainment). “It’s like people talking about a TV show — I can be perfectly aware of the TV show and the story, but it doesn’t mean I watch it.”

She explained that, from what she’s heard, she’s not missing out on anything by not having social media accounts. “I have other friends who watch it, and they tell me about it,” she explained. “I mean, we were talking about Instagram. Everyone has Instagram on their phone. And I just, yeah, [if I had it] I would be looking at it all the time.”

Instead of spending all her time on social media, the Pretty Woman star would rather spend time with her husband Daniel Moder and their three kids. “It’s about allowing time to just exist,” she explained. “Conversations require a complete disregard for the clock — so that you can just listen and really be present. It becomes a paradox of efficiency and presence.”

Despite Being Mocked For Her Appearance, Julia Roberts Refuses To Get Cosmetic Surgery

Over the years, Julia Roberts has been very vocal about not having had any cosmetic procedures done. Even when trolls mocked her appearance on social media, the actress refused to change her appearance to cater to them.

“I’m aging with dignity and calm. I do not do lifting or botox,” the Pretty Woman star revealed in an interview for You Magazine (via the Guardian). “By Hollywood standards, I guess I’ve already taken a big risk in not having had a facelift. But I’ve told Lancôme that I want to be an aging model—so they have to keep me for at least five more years until I’m over 50.”

She’s also explained that her decision to not have cosmetic surgery done stems from a sense of nostalgia. “I went to a dermatologist recently for a skin check and he looked at the side of my face and says, ‘Oh, do you want me to fill this in?’” pointing toward her smile lines,” Roberts recounted in an interview for Marie Claire (via Beauty Heaven).

“Fill them in? Do you know how many good stories are in there? How many good laughs? How many great dinner parties? Fill them in? What are you talking about?’”

A refreshing outlook from the actress.
