There is no question of whether Channing Tatum has a box office draw. Outside his celebrity status, good looks, and charm that oozes from the screen, his movies bring in hundreds of millions of dollars. As such, he is a very bankable actor when it comes to casting the Free Guy star in comedies or action films. And they are roles that Tatum’s fans have come to love him for.
While Tatum is paid well and has amassed quite a fortune for himself, the roles that he plays have not changed much over the years. While there is nothing wrong with having a niche carved out or a wheelhouse where actors find themselves comfortable, it can also become dull. As such, many actors take chances to stretch their acting talents and try to be seen in a light other than what they are pigeonholed as. And this could very well be why Tatum bought the rights to Ghost. To show audiences that he is deeper than some of the characters portrayed on the big screen. But fans are not convinced that this is the vehicle Tatum should use to do so.
While Channing Tatum has purchased the rights to Ghost, fans are questioning whether there should be a remake.
How Channing Tatum Wants To Remake Ghost
Now that Tatum’s production company has purchased the rights to Ghost, the Dog star wants to put his own artistic flair on the film while also removing some portions that would not read well with audiences today.
“We actually have the rights,” Tatum explains. “Yeah, we have the rights to ‘Ghost.'” “But we’re going to do something different,” Tatum goes on to say. “I think it needs to change a little bit.”
This change the Logan Lucky star is talking about is some racial stereotypes that the original Ghost contains. Something that filmmakers who have decided to remake films have had to deal with, given the climate was different twenty-plus years ago. And things that were considered acceptable during that time would not be in this day and age.
Further still, Tatum himself may be playing the lead role that Patrick Swayze made so famous. A role that is unlike anything that the Magic Mike star has ever tackled before. But it may be that Tatum is looking for a vehicle to take his career in a different direction. And if done correctly, a Ghost remake may be able to do just that.
Fans Feel Patrick Swayze Movies Need To Stop Being Remade
Depending on the television show that is getting a reboot or a film that is going to be remade, fans are always going to have mixed emotions. This is due to the sentimentality attached to the project or because a beloved actor is not going to be a part of the remake.
When it comes to Ghost, Swayze fans are completely up in arms and are adamant that any and all Swayze films need to stop being remade.
“Why do they keep remaking Patrick Swayze movies?” one Reddit user wrote. “Red Dawn, Dirty Dancing, Point Break are three I can think of off the top of my head. It’s like a campaign to erase his cinematic legacy. None of the remakes are huge hits either.”

Another user wrote, “You’ll never be able to recreate the magic the original had. I mean just think of the effects and performances. It’s truly a movie that captured lightning in a bottle.”
There really were not any fans of Tatum or Swayze that thought a remake would be a good idea. Perhaps when a storyline is revealed and more information about the cast is available, minds can be changed. But for now, a Ghost remake is being met with a great deal of pushback.
There Are Questions About Whether Channing Tatum Can Pull Off Drama
Fans have questioned whether Tatum could pull off the role of Sam Wheat the way Swayze did in Ghost. And while this is a valid question, Swayze fans might not have as much to worry about as they believe they do.
This is because Tatum’s body of work is on par with where Swayze was before he signed on to Ghost. While he seems to have tried to imitate Brad Pitt in the past, with where he is now, the remake might just be what Tatum has been waiting for to show just what he is made of.
Given that some are calling Tatum a “modern incarnation of Patrick Swayze” it is easy to see why the Step It Up star would be drawn to the script.
The comparison is being drawn between the two actors because “between helping originate the Step Up series of dance-centered romance and taking on everything from dramas like Dear John to his contractually obligated G.I. Joe movies, Channing Tatum has established the same sort of range that the late Dirty Dancing and Road House star did back in the day.”
Now, purists of the original may not be willing to jump on this bandwagon so quickly. But before rushing to judgment, perhaps Tatum should be given the benefit of the doubt.
He is savvy enough to know that fans will be expecting a lot from the film. And if this is truly going to be the film that launches Tatum’s career to the next level, he is not going to do wrong by the script.
As such, before stating the film will flop before it even goes into production, Ghost fans may want to give it a chance. It may not be the original but sometimes change is good. And at the very least, it will be a very nice homage paid to the late and great Patrick Swayze.
