Dan Walker took to Instagram on Monday evening to hit back at critics who had complained about his appearance on Channel 5’s 5 News. The former BBC Breakfast presenter, 47, hosted the first show of the week wearing a smart navy suit over a crisp white shirt. However, it was Dan’s choice of footwear that rubbed some up the wrong way.
The father-of-three opted for a pair of navy, leather trainers which cost £299 from luxury footwear brand, Oliver Sweeney.
Sharing a photograph from Monday’s news bulletin, Dan wrote in view of his 302,000 followers: “So… a few viewers got in contact about my shoes on @c5news tonight.
“Personally, I think there are far more important things going on in the world and I don’t believe wearing these counts as a ‘disgrace’ or the dropping of ‘standards’.
“They aren’t trainers and I think they are smart and I love them. What do you think? P.S. nice to be back. P.P.S for those asking they are @oliversweeney.”
At the time of writing, more than 500 users have taken to the comments to share their thoughts on Dan’s outfit.
One user replied that Dan’s choice of footwear was “not appropriate” for reading the news.
They said: “Not appropriate for reading the news, regardless of it being Channel 5. But [definitely] wouldn’t go as far as calling them a disgrace.”
Another echoed: “Sorry Dan. Love you but it’s a no from me re. your shoes. Well, you have asked!”
And a third wrote: “Defo not a disgrace but I prefer a more classic shoe with a suit personally, I think some traditions are worth preserving. Your suit is [heart eye emoji].”
Meanwhile, many others jumped to Dan’s defence and joined him in hitting back at his critics. One user questioned: “Does it affect the way he reads the news? Does it come across differently? Don’t think so. Didn’t realise there is a dress code.”
A second quipped: “Crikey…it’s Channel 5 News, not the State Opening of Parliament! Perspective people…”
And a third wrote: “There’s nothing wrong with them at all. People have nothing better to do than judge.”
