Time is ticking for Dianna Agron in the science fiction horror film Clock— or at least it is for her character in the film. The actress portrays Ella, a successful interior designer in her late thirties who, despite pressures from her family and friends, is extremely comfortable with not having children. In an effort to jumpstart, what she believes, is her broken biological clock, Ella willingly participates in experimental treatment that results in horrifying side effects and begins a rollercoaster of disturbing events.

The timing of the film is fortuitous as Agron— not only relates to Ella in age— but (far less dramatically) shares some of her character’s struggles with enduring imposition of having children of her own. But does she feel the exact same way as her on-screen character? Has she sworn off becoming a mom altogether? Does she join the list of celebrities who have chosen not to have children?

What Was Life On Set Of Clock Like For Dianna Agron?

Dianna Agron’s experience filming Clock was deeply affected by what was not only happening on set but also off of it. The film was shot in Texas and Agron opened up in an interview with Rolling Stone about how Roe v. Wade being overturned during filming influenced the energy on set of Clock.

“This movie was very personal to Alexis Jacknow, there were so many heads of department that were female, and it was a fun experience having so many people believe so fully in what we were exploring. We were also shooting this right in Texas as Roe was overturned, so it was charged. It felt emotional being on set, telling this story, and thinking about people who are having their choice completely stripped away from them,” she said.

Agron also opened up about the physicality behind the role, and shared how she endured the brutal heat during her off time from shooting.

“You’ve got to really take care of your body on the two days that you have off on the weekends. I think I just melted into a bed and dragged myself off to go swimming, or go on a walk, or do things that were kind of nice and gentle. But I had bruises and cuts and all kinds of things all over my body,” she says.

“It wasn’t a long shoot, but in the beginning of shooting it was kind of still chilly, and by the end it was blazing hot. So, you’d be driving in the car and just like the sun beating down on you, and understanding that you’re getting wildly dehydrated and drinking electrolytes,” she continued.

How Does Dianna Agron Relate To Her Character In Clock?

Fans of Dianna Agron know that Clock isn’t the actress’ first rodeo with tackling a role involving childbirth. Agron is best known for her breakout role in “Glee,” where she played Quinn Fabray, the mean-girl cheerleader whose teenage pregnancy shaped her character arc. But that was a while ago. The actress has since moved away from mainstream work and found success in other projects like the 2020 indie film Shiva Baby.

But now, her role in Clock has a mirroring effect on the actress’ own life as, she too, is a thirty-something woman without children. Agron identified immediately with the pressures her character experiences, and was drawn to the role both for the challenge of the genre as well as the subject matter.

“I am a woman who is starting to be in her late 30s. From the moment I turned 30, there was just an onset of thoughts, questions and opinions about my choices as it related to my biological clock. That’s really a thing, and I just was so taken by that, by what that meant, and how it made me feel,” Agron says. “Sometimes it would come from people that were very close to me. Sometimes it would come from complete strangers and you just think, ‘What a wild experience. I’m living my life authentically and people are asking questions and making me feel as if I am missing something about my own personal journey.’”

The actress also opened up in an interview with Nylon about how her cultural background allowed Dianna Agron to relate to her character on Clock. Ella who, like Agron, is Jewish and is pressured to have children in honor of her lineage and her ancestors.

“I think as a Jewish woman playing this Jewish character, that that’s a part of her experience. Her father, he very much makes it known that not only does he want children at the table, he feels it is her responsibility considering their family lineage and history to do that, to be of service in that way. I think that that story is also similar to many families. So many people could understand that that’s something that they feel a personal burden because of their culture or background, because their parental figures put that stress and pressure on them.”

While it’s unclear whether Dianna Agron wants to have children, what the actress prioritizes is the autonomy of women to choose how they want to live their lives. What we do know is that she is happily dating celebrated artist Harold Ancart and seems comfortable taking things at her own pace.

“There’s this ‘normal’ timeline that people think everyone should stick to. My mom had me when she was 30. I’m 37 and have no children. I also have friends my age whose parents had them when they were 40 to 44 years old, but that was not as ‘normal’. Somehow, weirdly, 37 years later it is still not very ‘normal.’ And, whatever choice you’re making, I don’t understand somebody — especially a stranger — feeling that they need to wake you up out of your fever dream, as if you don’t know what choices you’re making,” she told Rolling Stone.

Agron also opened up about how she didn’t understand “the impulse to comment on other people’s decision-making,” about when, whether, or how they wish to build a family. She also opened up being present in her friend’s children’s lives as well as her own god-children.

“…there have been many things that have happened and many choices that have led to where I am right now. I’m very happy and very resolved in all of the choices that I’ve made. I’m very active with the kids that are in my community. They are very much a part of my life,” she told Nylon.
