They may not have starred on the same series of The Great British Bake Off, but winner Candice Brown has praised host Alison Hammond, calling her an “absolute stroke of genius”.

The 38-year-old took part in the show when it was on BBC and missed out on the opportunity to work with Alison, 48, who joined the Channel 4 series this year.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Candice said: “Alison is just an absolute stroke of genius, she’s joyous, she’s what the bakers need.

“I’ve met Alison a few times, I’ve worked with her and she’s just pure joy.

“In those times of stress and panic and worry and imposter syndrome, ‘I’m not good enough, this isn’t going to work’, she’s the perfect person for a cuddle or for a dance, or whatever she does to help you through that.”

Candice was a part of the seventh series of the hit show and went on to claim victory and carve out a successful career for herself.

Despite it being seven years since she won, the pub owner revealed she knows exactly what this year’s contestants are going through as they compete to be the next champ.

She continued: “That music still puts the absolute fear in me. It’s a funny thing because you know exactly how they’re feeling.

“You know what that walk to the tent feels like, you know what that carpet in the tent feels like, you know that it’s just a tent.

“They are hot, they are sweating from every single part of their body,” Candice revealed.

Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry critiqued Candice’s bake when she was on the BBC version of the hit-series, but she was fortunate enough to return for the New Year’s special on Channel 4 and work with Prue Leith.

“Paul and Prue play that good cop, bad cop but they really want you to do well. The show is not about failing, they don’t set you up for bad failure,” she told Express.co.uk.

Recalling her time spent with Mary, 88, Candice divulged: “Mary was just incredible. She made me more nervous than Paul did. I wanted to impress Mary, I wanted her to love me like a nan.”

Candice Brown is working with Vital Proteins on the launch of its new Strawberry and Lemon Beauty Collagen, perfect for healthy skin and hair.
