Gwyneth Paltrow admitted to leaving the Marvel franchise as she felt “a bit old”, slamming superhero movies as a whole for being unoriginal.

The former Iron Man star appeared on the YouTube talk show Hot Ones this week where she discussed with host Sean Evans, 37 the idea of quantity over quality in the industry.

Evans asked the star about American Fiction director Cord Jefferson’s comments at the Oscars, pushing Hollywood to invest in smaller, more independent movies.

Paltrow agreed that in terms of superhero films, there is a real decrease in “quality or specificity or real point-of-views”.

The 51-year-old said: “If I look at the industry as a whole, there’s this sort of big push into superhero movies.

“I mean, you can only make so many good ones that feel truly original.

“And yet there’s still, you know, always trying to reach as many people as possible, which sometimes hinders quality or specificity or real point-of-views.

“I do think that you do get more diversity of art when there’s less at stake, and people can express their true voice and make a film the way they want to make it.

“And then, I think those are generally the more resonant ones.”

The Goop founder was part of the Marvel family, starring opposite Oscar-winner Robert Downey Jr in the Iron Man movies as Tony Stark’s love interest Pepper Potts.

But she chose to leave the superhero franchise five years ago as Paltrow began to feel “a bit old” to be in the movies.

She was in a total of seven Marvel movies before the Shakespeare in Love actress decided it was time to make her exit.

As well as discussing the lack of originality in superhero films, she also said that some of the films she worked on in the past would not be greenlit today.

“I grew up doing those movies and I sometimes lament the fact.

“Like, I look back at some of the movies I made in the 1990s and think that just wouldn’t get made now.”

Some of Paltrow’s previous work includes Se7en, The Pallbearer, Emma, Sliding Doors, Duets, Bounce, Two Lovers, Country Strong and Contagion.

Less of Paltrow’s time is focused on acting now, though, as she’s the founder of international wellness and lifestyle brand, Goop.
