When celebrities split, they can sometimes split as friends, with good things to say about each other and their time together. Ever since Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie’s divorce in 2003, the two seem to be on good terms.
Back when they were dating, and then married, in the early 2000s, the couple captured multiple headlines for their candid interviews and open affection for one another.
The couple also caught attention for some infamous jewelry they wore. The pair was known for wearing necklaces that contained each other’s blood. According to the Armageddon actor, the media made a bigger deal out of the necklaces than necessary.
It seems Thornton feels the same now as he did back when he and Jolie wore their necklaces on the red carpet – that they were a way for the couple to show their love for each other.
According to Insider Thornton told People, “The necklaces were a very simple thing, ‘Hey let’s poke our fingers with a pen and smear a little blood on there and when we’re away from each other we’ll wear the necklace.’ It was that easy. But by the time it came out in the press it sounded like we were wearing a bucket of blood around our necks. That was a great time.”
Discussing the unique jewelry, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor said, “She (Jolie) thought it would be interesting and romantic if we took a little razor blade and sliced our fingers, smeared a little blood on those lockets, and you wear it around your neck just like you wear your son or daughter’s baby hair in one.”
Thornton still believes that what was said about their necklaces was overblown. “From that we were wearing quart jars of blood around our necks.” Although the two divorced in 2003, Thornton has nothing but good things to say about their time together.
Both Thornton And Jolie Have Discussed The Necklaces
Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie caught numerous headlines while they were dating and then suddenly eloped to Las Vegas in 2000. There’s no doubting that while Thornton and Jolie were married, their love burned bright.
The couple was incredibly open about their relationship and marriage during interviews, had no problem with PDA, exchanged and often wore necklaces that had one another’s blood.

Many celebrities will go to great lengths to keep their relationships secret, but Jolie and Thornton had no problem getting candid about their marriage. Both have also discussed the unique necklaces they exchanged which held each other’s blood.
According to E! News, Thornton was talking with students at Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and Television. While there he was asked about the interesting jewelry he exchanged with Jolie. He told them about Jolie finding the necklaces.
“[A] vial of blood is very simple. Angie came home one day with a kit she bought. You know those lockets you buy that are clear and you put a picture of your grannie in it or something like that and wear it around your neck? That’s what it was.”
“She bought two of those. We were apart a lot because she’s off making Tomb Raider and I’m making Monster’s Ball. We were on opposite ends – we see each other for two weeks and whatever.”
The Girl, Interrupted actor has also discussed the couple’s infamous necklaces since their 2003 divorce. In a 2008 interview with Entertainment Weekly she said, “It was never a vial… It was like a flower press.”
“It was like from a slight cut on your finger and you press your fingerprint in. It was kind of a sweet gesture. I thought it was kind of romantic!”
Jolie also revealed how she feels about Thornton, saying, “I still love him dearly and think the world of him and I’m proud to have been his wife for a time.”
What Billy Bob Thornton Has Said Looking Back On Their Time Together
Many celebrities go through public divorces that seem to be tough on both parties. Angelina Jolie has had to endure a public battle with Brad Pitt, but she’s said good things about her ex-husband Billy Bob Thornton. And Billy Bob Thornton looks back on their time together with fond memories.
According to Animated Times, Thornton has said he is still friends with his ex-wife Jolie. He also discussed the reason they are no longer together.
“I look at that time as a great time because, you know, Angie is still a friend of mine, and she’s a great person. The movies she makes are still things that are important to her, and whether they succeed or fail, she still does what she believes in, and I’ll always respect her for that.”
Discussing why they are no longer together, Thornton said, “Hers is a global lifestyle, and mine is an agoraphobic lifestyle. So, that’s really the only reason we’re probably still not together, you know because it was just a different path and life we wanted to take.”
In another article, the Monster’s Ball actor also claimed that he and Jolie still checked up on each other. “She makes sure I’m doing okay [and] I make sure she’s doing okay.”
