Mariah Carey is one of the most successful singers of her generation. Her music has defined an era of popular music. During her career, she has amassed a total of 19 number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
That makes Carey the artist with the most number ones of any solo artist. She is also an inductee in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, having co-written the majority of her own songs. Carey is responsible for writing the modern Christmas classic “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”
Nick Cannon made a name for himself as an actor and comedian. He also was a host at Nickelodeon for a period of time. Cannon has also hosted shows like America’s Got Talent and The Masked Singer. On top of all of that, Cannon even has his own show, Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ‘n’ Out. His marriage to Carey made headlines, especially because nobody knew the two were dating in the first place.
But before Carey walked down the isle with Cannon, she was married to Tommy Mottola. Mottola was the CEO of Sony Music, the record company Carey signed to after meeting Mottola for the first time.
Mariah Carey’s First Marriage And How She Escaped It
Mariah Carey met Tommy Mottola during her time as a background singer for Brenda K. Starr. Starr took Carey to a party to help the aspiring singer shop her demo tape around.
They approached Walter Yetnikoff, Jerry L. Greenberg, and Tommy Mottola. According to Carey, Starr went to hand the tape to Greenberg, but Mottola took it out of her hand first. At the time, Carey had no idea who Mottola was.
Mottola listened to the tape in his car on the way home. Blown away by what he heard, Mottola tracked Carey down and signed her to a record contract. It was also around this time that Carey and Mottola began dating.
According to Carey, her relationship with Mottola was toxic prior to his marriage proposal. However, she believed a toxic situation would get better if she got married.
Carey married Mottola in 1993 and soon learned she made a mistake. In the years since their divorce, she has described the marriage as confining and stifling. She has also described Mottola as controlling and emotionally abusive. The pair announced their separation in 1997 and divorced by 2000.

In the years following her divorce from Mottola, Carey dated athlete Derek Jeter and singer Luis Miguel. Her career experienced a pitfall when her film and soundtrack project Glitter were seen as bombs compared to her previous success.

Carey would also experience a personal setback as she was hospitalized. Years later, she would reveal she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the time.
Carey got her career back on track in 2005 when she released her album “The Emancipation of Mimi.” The single “We Belong Together” became Carey’s 16th number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album marked a comeback for Carey after a period of waning record sales and poor reviews.
At the same time, Nick Cannon had been speaking about Carey in interviews. When asked about his celebrity crush, Cannon often mentioned Carey. According to Carey, her friends made her aware of Cannon’s comments, to which she was in disbelief. The two met for the first time at the 2005 Teen Choice Awards when Cannon presented Carey with an award. The two spoke briefly backstage afterwards and reconnected again a few years later.
Having Children, Getting Divorced, And Where Nick Cannon And Mariah Carey Stand Today
In 2008, Carey and Cannon were married in a secret ceremony. The news eventually became public and the couple’s wedding pictures were featured in People Magazine.
It’s rumored that the couple were only dating mere weeks prior to getting married. The two said they planned on starting a family and Carey got pregnant later that same year.
Unfortunately, Carey experienced a miscarriage, which would be kept secret until 2010. 2010 was also the year the couple announced they were pregnant again.
Carey gave birth to twins in 2011 after what she said was a very difficult pregnancy. It was after this, however, that Carey and Cannon’s marriage fell apart. The couple got a divorce, which was finalized in 2016.
In the aftermath of their marriage and divorce, Carey and Cannon have put up a good front publicly. Despite some accusing Carey of dissing Cannon in her song “Infinity,” the couple maintains a good relationship for their children.
Carey specifically said that she didn’t see her parents get along after their divorce, so she wants to set a better example for her kids.
Even though Carey and Cannon’s marriage didn’t last, it’s nice to know they can get along for the sake of their children!
