Howard Stern Thinks Richard Simmons Disappeared Because He Was Burnt Out And Getting Old
Sadly for fans of The Howard Stern Show, Richard Simmons won’t be appearing. Although he has an iconic history on the show, Stern confirmed that an invitation was in fact extended, but Simmons declined the invite.
Fans and media have speculated for years as to what happened to Simmons, and why he went completely off the map. Well, Howard Stern has his own theory, and he feels as though Simmons went in hiding because of the simple fact that he’s completely burned out.
“Here’s my theory: Maybe it just got to be too much. He was getting older and he felt like, ‘I don’t want people to see me old.’ Or maybe he just burned out. Maybe he just was like, ‘You know what, I’ve had enough.’”
Robin Quivers agreed with Stern that fatigue may have been the biggest factor for his exit.
“I think it’s the burned out thing, because Richard was Richard 24 hours a day. He was always ready to hit the high notes. You know, and he very rarely was quiet and just calm.”
Although fans haven’t heard much from Richard Simmons over the years, Producer Gary Dell’Abate did confirm he spoke to Simmons recently, and that the TV personality is doing fine.
Gary Dell’Abate kept a close relationship with Simmons and calls him a friend, especially given all that good Simmons did for his family in the past.
Dell’Abate tells Howard Stern and Robin Quivers, “I wrote to Richard, not for airtime for the radio, and I’m not gonna talk about what we discussed, but I did confirm that I was corresponding with him. Because, you know, he did some really nice things for my family [when] my brother was in the hospital. He bought my mother a dress for my wedding. He’s just super nice to us and I just wanted to make sure he’s OK.”
Dell’Abate confirmed that Simmons was likely fatigued given the hundreds of phone calls alone he’d take on daily. “He had a group of people and I think every day he made hundreds of calls and wrote hundreds of letters, it’s exhausting.”
Stern concluded by expressing interest in having Simmons on the show, but went on to reveal that the invitation was rejected by Simmons.
“It would be great because everyone wants to know what’s going on with him. I would like to do it serious type of interview with Richard Simmons and get to the bottom of all this stuff. It would be fascinating.”
Without a doubt, fans would love to see such a reunion, but Simmons’ priorities are elsewhere these days.
Richard Simmons Recently Clarified A Facebook Post About His Health
Richard Simmons has caused confusion about his health in the past, particularly speaking out about his skin cancer diagnosis. Simmons startled fans after a cryptic tweet, which was interpreted by fans that he was passing away and nearing his death.
“Mirror mirror on the wall what’s that blemish which is so small? There was this strange looking bump under my right eye. I had a tube of neosporin which I would put on I the morning and the evening….it was still there. It was time to call my dermatologist,” Simmons revealed.
“I sat in his chair and he looked at it through a magnifying mirror. He told me he would have to scrape it and put it under the microscope. Now I am getting a little bit nervous.” “He comes back about 20 minutes later and says the C word. You have cancer,” Simmons continued. “I asked him what kind of cancer and he said. Basel Cell Carcinoma. I told him to stop calling me dirty names. He laughed.”
Simmons went on to apologize shortly after.
“Sorry many of you have gotten upset about my message today. Even the press has gotten in touch with me I am not dying,” Simmons shared. “It was a message about saying how we should embrace every day that we have.”
