Spanning an impressive six years, Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn’s relationship was the stuff of dreams. Though determined to protect their relationship from prying eyes, the duo’s affection for each other remained palpable, with Alwyn even collaborating on some of Swift’s music under a pseudonym.
Fans were, therefore, completely dumbfounded when news broke that the twosome had decided to go their separate ways in April.
But what exactly would cause such a picture-perfect relationship to crumble so suddenly? Well, as it turns out, things had not been all rainbows and sunshine for quite a while. Per insiders, the ever-reclusive Alwyn had been struggling with the intense public scrutiny surrounding Swift’s life.
“They had plenty in common and fell in love in a safe bubble while she was retreating from the world during Reputation,” a source revealed to People. “Then the pandemic hit, and they were locked down together and able to continue growing their relationship in this insulated way. But he didn’t really ‘know’ her yet outside of that bubble,” the source continued.
“Joe has struggled with Taylor’s level of fame and the attention from the public. The differences in their personalities have also become harder to ignore after years together. They’ve grown apart.”
Though the twosome had been “talking about marriage as recently as a few months ago,” they ultimately opted to go their separate ways. “It was more of Taylor’s decision to break up, but both of them realized that they weren’t completely right for one another,” yet another inside source revealed to People.
“They had been together for such a long time and were spending so much time together, but their personalities were just too different. Joe is more introverted, shy and quiet.”
Joe Alwyn Might Be A Completely Different Man After Taylor Swift Split
With news of their split still sending shockwaves through the internet, fans must wonder: what does Joe Alwyn’s life post-Taylor Swift look like? Well, like Swift, the now 32-year-old has refocused his energies into his career.

Mere weeks after news of their split went public, Alwyn retreated to Hungary to commence principal photography for his upcoming film, The Brutalist, which stars Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce.
Directed by Brady Corbet, The Brutalist traces the steps of architect László Toth (Brody) and his wife, Erzsébet (Jones) as they journey away from the shadows of post-war Europe. Seeking a fresh start, the twosome set course for America, where they encounter a wealthy patron (Pearce) who completely transforms their lives.
Aside from The Brutalist, Alwyn is also set to star in AND, an upcoming film helmed by The Favourite director, Yorgos Lanthimos. Though plot details and premiere dates have been kept under tight wraps, the film will apparently also star Emma Stone, Margaret Qualley, and Jesse Piemons.
With most of Taylor Swift’s inner circle, including Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, and Gigi Hadid, unfollowing him on social media, fans might assume that Alwyn’s social life has taken a hit. However, this assumption couldn’t be further from the truth. While his social media presence remains minimal, the Miss Americana star has been spotted out and about.
His most recent public outing? The 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where he joined a select gathering for an elegant dinner orchestrated by Celine artistic director, Hedi Slimane.
Is Joe Alwyn Dating Emma Laird?
Mere months after news of their split broke, rumors swirled that Taylor Swift and her controversial ex Matt Healy had rekindled their romance. However, a source close to the Grammy winner quickly dispelled these rumors. “They are absolutely not together and aren’t even in contact anymore,” the source claimed. “She is enjoying being single and has been spending time in the studio and hanging out with friends in New York City.”
About a month earlier, Alwyn was also rumored to be involved with Mayor of Kingstown star Emma Laird. The unconfirmed rumor started swirling after the 24-year-old actress posted a snapshot of Alwyn on her Instagram with the caption, “moments in March.”
Before comments on the contentious post were disabled, observant fans swiftly noted uncanny resemblances between the image and another photograph posted by Laird on January 2023, sparking speculations that Alwyn might have been unfaithful to Swift.
Though neither Laird nor Alwyn have commented on the ongoing rumors, sources suggest that Emma might be Alwyn’s solace from prying eyes. “Emma has been there for Joe since news of his split from Taylor emerged,” an inside source revealed to The Sun. “Joe struggles with fame and enjoyed hanging out with Emma in Hungary, where he wouldn’t be recognized.”
As for where Alwyn and his former beau stand today, a source revealed to People, “[Taylor’s] very focused on touring and her career right now. Taylor has nothing but respect for Joe and really loved and enjoyed all the time and memories she shared with him. They had a deep connection, and she really appreciated that. She hopes they can be friendly in the future.”
