In the years before his death in March 2020, Kenny Rogers spoke openly about the ways aging and declining health were affecting his everyday life. In 2015, at age 77, the country legend acknowledged that his physical limitations had begun to take a toll. “I swore that I would [perform] until I embarrassed myself,” he told Today. He feared that moment had arrived. “I’m getting to where I don’t walk around well. … My mobility is really driving me crazy,” Rogers said. He subsequently announced plans to complete one final tour before retiring.
Into the second year of his final tour, “The Gambler’s Last Deal,” Rogers once again highlighted his mobility concerns, noting that he had had to interrupt a few performances over it. And he wasn’t okay with that. “This is all I’ve done for 60 years, but my mobility has gotten kind of strange, and I don’t like to go on stage and have to apologize. It’s one of those things — you make decisions based on what life gives you,” he told Rolling Stone in July 2017. A few months later, Rogers expressed how much he was struggling. “Every day is not a holiday. You get out there [and] it’s hard, hard work. I can’t do it like I used to do it,” he told Fox News (via Page Six) in October 2017.
Rogers canceled the last leg of that farewell tour in April 2018, citing health problems. His final performance had taken place in October 2017, a show that also became the last occasion on which he and longtime collaborator Dolly Parton performed together. From that point forward, Rogers continued to face serious health challenges.

Kenny Rogers experienced a sharp decline in health
When Rogers revealed his retirement plans in 2015, he said his young twin sons were a major reason he wanted to step away from touring. He hoped to spend more time with Jordan and Justin, who were 15 when their father died. Instead, the singer’s final years brought a significant decline in his health, despite his efforts to prolong his life. After the tour cancellation in 2018, Rogers sought to reassure his fans that he was improving. “His doctors fully expect the outcome to be great,” his representative told ABC News.
However, Rogers continued to experience health challenges. In May 2019, he was hospitalized for dehydration but made it a point to note his overall health was fine in an effort to dismiss the “wild misinformation and speculation” about his well-being. “[He] can assure everyone he plans on sticking around through the years to come,” his team shared on his Instagram. Sadly, that wouldn’t be the case. Rogers’ family announced his death 10 months later. “Rogers passed away peacefully at home from natural causes under the care of hospice and surrounded by his family,” their Facebook message revealed.
His family has kept his Instagram going, with Rogers’ fifth wife, Wanda Miller, and youngest sons often paying tribute to the late singer. “We still go to the same movie theater we went to with you, and we always park in the same little spot on the side where you would park … every single time!” Jordan and Justin wrote in a March 2026 message to mark the anniversary of his death. Rogers may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.
