Kristen Stewart‘s new movie Love Lies Bleeding came out on March 8, and everyone involved couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve accomplished. The movie is a romantic thriller, and it can be as violent as it is tender, since it revolves around a very loving relationship between two women. Kristen Stewart and her co-star Katy O’Brian played their parts perfectly and shared great chemistry.
Watching them interact in the movie, no one would have guessed how awkward things were between them while filming. They got along great and had a lot of fun, but several intimate scenes were a little uncomfortable to get through.

Sex scenes are one of the trickiest things for actors to handle. Not because they are inherently difficult, but because of the inevitable awkwardness they entail. Actors are at their most vulnerable in those times. That’s why it’s important to be surrounded by trustworthy people.
Katy O’Brian, Kristen Stewart’s co-star in Love Lies Bleeding, had a lot of things to say about her intimate scenes with the Twilight star, and they were not necessarily flattering. For either of them. Firstly, she addressed the myth that intimate scenes are uncomfortable because they’re sexy.
“It’s just so not glamorous, and it’s really not that sexy when you’re doing it,” she explained. “I mean, first of all, you’ve got a boom-mic guy that’s got his microphone hovering over you while it’s all happening.”
Specifically about her work with Kristen Stewart, she said it could get uncomfortable quickly, not because of inappropriate behavior, but because of the elements involved in the process. The two of them were wrapped in several layers to avoid anyone being exposed, and the fabric was taped so it wouldn’t move, making it annoying.
Also, the high temperatures didn’t help. “It was so hot that every time Kristen would pull the pants off, everything would just pull right off. So finally we’re just like, ‘Can we just do this with one layer? Do we really need a diaper?'” The actress joked. “We’re filming in Albuquerque. It’s hot, it’s in the summer — it’s like 112 degrees. So we feel sweaty and gross, and we just hope that we’re not stinky and everything. It doesn’t feel as sexy in the moment.“
Everyone Was Taken Care Of During The Intimate Scenes
As awkward and embarrassing as intimate scenes can get, no one felt unsafe on the set of Love Lies Bleeding. Katy O’Brian and director Rose Glass spoke about how carefully planned the sex scenes were. The director didn’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable, so everything was agreed upon in writing to make sure no one overstepped.
“Basically, it’s literally agreed in writing before anyone even gets on set exactly what isn’t going to be shown: from what angle, how much, how little. By the time you get there, it is all quite mechanical,” Rose Glass explained.
Because of that, there’s little room for improvisation. “If anything changes, we have to go back and sign more paperwork. We just had to approve it all ahead of time,” Katy O’Brian said.
According to the director, it’s not only the actors, no one in the crew finds it remotely sexy. “You’re usually worrying more about something like the camera falling on the actors and killing them and hoping that doesn’t happen, and forgetting the fact that, oh yeah, they’re simulating sex,” she laughed.
