Matthew Broderick says he may have been the “victim” of the “longest meeting ever” with Warren Beatty before they made the 2016 romantic comedy “Rules Don’t Apply.”
During an Oct. 22 appearance on the podcast “Nepo, Baby!,” Broderick, 64, recalled traveling to Los Angeles for what he expected to be a one-day meeting with Beatty, 89. Instead, the visit stretched into several months.
“I remember I was early, driving up the hill to Mulholland, so nervous. I had to pull over and wait at a curb for a while, just sweating,” he said.
The “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” star said Beatty greeted him at the house dressed in a white shirt and white pants. Broderick added that he “looked like Warren Beatty.”
Broderick also noticed burn marks on the filmmaker’s face, which had reportedly resulted from having spots burned off before production began. He said the marks were “good” because they made Beatty “look more human.”
“We had a really good dinner. We didn’t talk about the movie for a long time. Then he gave me the script, … and I was put in a room to read it,” Broderick recalled.
By the time he finished the script, it was already late. After the pair discussed the film, Beatty invited Broderick to stay overnight when the actor said he needed to return to his hotel.
The “Lion King” actor said he was “creeping” through the house the next morning, hoping to make a quiet exit, when he found Beatty preparing oatmeal in the kitchen.
Broderick then tried to use a trip to the gym as a reason to leave. Beatty, however, reminded him that the house had its own gym.
“I don’t remember when that ended, but the reason I say it might be the longest meeting ever is I did the movie and stayed there. He had a little guest house,” Broderick revealed.
He joked that the meeting effectively lasted “like, three months” because he never left the property.
“I never really left Mulholland,” Broderick said.
Beatty directed and co-wrote “Rules Don’t Apply,” in addition to starring in the film with Broderick, Lily Collins and Alden Ehrenreich.
The cast also featured Beatty’s wife, Annette Bening. The couple married in 1992 and share four children.
Broderick married Sarah Jessica Parker in May 1997 during a surprise ceremony at a Manhattan synagogue.
The couple have three children: son James, 23, and 17-year-old twin daughters Tabitha and Marion.
