Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos recently provided an update regarding the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, which has now reached the four-month mark.

Speaking to Tucson’s KOLD News 13 on Monday, June 1, Nanos emphasized the complexity of such investigations. “These cases are challenging,” he remarked. “It’s not just about this case alone. Many of our investigations demand extensive collaboration. It’s not as straightforward as a detective conducting interviews and making an arrest.”

He pointed out the delicate nature of the search for Today show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother, hinting at the heightened public interest surrounding the case.

“The lengthy process is primarily due to our reliance on labs,” Nanos explained. “We must ensure the integrity of both the case and the DNA evidence, which is crucial to law enforcement efforts.”

Nanos further detailed that digital forensic labs and DNA testing are integral to the investigation. He stressed the importance of accuracy, stating, “Arresting the wrong individual is not something anyone wants to see in a case of this significance.”

News broke on February 1 that Nancy had gone missing from her Arizona home. Savannah, 54, took a months-long leave from her role at Today, returning to the news desk in April.

Details continue to emerge amid Nancy’s disappearance, but a suspect has not yet been taken into custody.

When the investigation hit the 100-day mark last month, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Us Weekly that the search for Nancy is “an active and ongoing investigation,” noting that they are working closely with the FBI.

“DNA and video analysis are underway, supported by laboratories across the country,” the statement added. “Advances in technology are aiding investigative efforts, and tips continue to be received and reviewed.”

Savannah Guthrie's Mom Nancy

Questions still remain after Today show host Savannah Guthrie‘s mother, Nancy Guthrie, was reported missing. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the news on February 1, sharing a missing person report via X. Nancy was described as a “vulnerable adult” who was last seen “at her residence” within Arizona’s Catalina Foothills area on the evening […]

Savannah has also continued to share tributes to her missing mother via social media.

“Mother, daughter, sister, Nonie, we miss you with every breath,” Savannah captioned an Instagram post when celebrating Mother’s Day on May 10. “We will never stop looking for you. We will never be at peace until we find you.”

She added, “We need help. Someone knows something that can make the difference. Call 1800CALLFBI. You can be anonymous and the reward remains available. Please keep praying. Bring her home.”

Nanos told People last month that he’s not “personally” in touch with the Guthrie family despite leading the hunt for Nancy.

“If they need the family for anything, they get in touch with them and the family,” he said. “It works both ways.”
