Will Forte humorously recounted how his wife, Olivia Modling, jokingly threatened divorce over his less-than-enthusiastic response to her new hairstyle.
The actor, known for his role in “MacGruber,” shared the story of being away filming the second season of “The Four Seasons” when he decided to spontaneously FaceTime Modling.
“When she answered the call, I saw her sporting freshly cut bangs,” he detailed during a Thursday episode of “Late Night With Seth Meyers.”
Forte admitted he was taken aback, having never seen her with bangs before and being unaware of her plans to get them. The first words he uttered were, “What happened to you?”
The 55-year-old actor confessed that his initial reaction was less than ideal, adding, “I even asked, ‘Is that a wig?!’”
The actor then tried to defend himself, explaining that Modling was “hunched over a little bit” on camera, and that the bangs weren’t similar to French actress Brigette Bardot’s but more like Spock’s from “Star Trek.”
“And it was also right around Halloween, so like, maybe she was going to dress as Spock for Halloween, and it was a wig?” he added.
Forte, however, realized his wife’s new hairdo wasn’t a wig and quickly tried to mend his initial remarks.
“It’s like, ‘How do I turn this around and make it seem like I think they’re beautiful?’” the “Last Man on Earth” alum recalled thinking.
“And then I kind of realized we were in the middle of rehearsal and everyone was like, ‘What are you doing on your phone?’ So I said, ‘Oh! I’ve got to go!’ So that was how it was left.”
Forte explained he was unable to contact Modling for half an hour and returned to his phone with several text messages from her.
Meyers then displayed the string of messages as Forte read them to the audience.
“She said, ‘Is that a wig? The. Worst. Possible. Thing. To. Hear. After. Cutting. BANGS,’” he read. “And I was like, ‘Ha ha ha ha.’ And then she said, ‘Divorce.’”
Forte reassured the audience that he and Modling “got past it.”
The couple got engaged in 2019 shortly after they started dating.
They got secretly married during an intimate ceremony in New Mexico in 2021.
Forte and Modling are the parents of two daughters, Zoe, 5, and Cecilia, who was born in 2022.
