Sydney two-bedroom apartment sparks outrage after landlord crams four tenants into one room

A landlord has been slammed for cramming four people into one room and then listing their two-bedroom apartment for $2,000 a month.

The owner had listed the horror Sydney property for rent in an online advertisement.

A prospective tenant stumbled across the listing before sharing a photo of one of the rooms that had been converted into a barrack.

Two bunk beds are seen crammed into the small space with a narrow aisle separating them.

A small fan is set up next to them indicating the room does not have any air conditioning.

The prospective tenant said they were left heartbroken over the sight. 

‘I came across a Facebook post where a landlord was advertising his $2000 2BDR in which four people can stay in one bedroom,’ they wrote on Reddit.

‘As somebody who is rather disconnected from the housing crisis, the picture broke my heart and just wanted to share. I hope you all are doing well.’

The prospective tenant explained the property had two rooms.

One of them was advertised for four people while the other one was advertised for two tenants.  

Social media users vented their anger and slammed the horrific state of the property saying it was an all too common trend.

‘There are people renting beds on balconies in Sydney! With plastic sheeting to keep out the weather. This is disturbing,’ one wrote.

A second person added: ‘Friend of mine stayed in an apartment like this.

‘He was miserable but it was all he could afford without owning a car. the balcony view was incredible. Literally across the water from the opera house.

‘To him it was worth it for a little while.’

One wrote they had a similar experience while renting in the inner-west.

‘I stayed in one in Newtown / St Peters where it was like six guys in one room – it was this bad even as a domestic student back in 2017/2018,’ they wrote.

The property is the latest example of the rental crisis sweeping Australia with tenants forced to put up with subpar living conditions as availability narrows.

Astroturf is used as carpet and an old mattress is heaped on the floor in photos seen by Daily Mail Australia.

Alternatively for Sydneysiders, renters had the option of a bizarre wooden loft in inner-city Pyrmont for $330 per week. 

Pictures uploaded on Flatmates.com.au show a wooden box elevated above the ground with space for a mattress but not much else.

The advertisement describes a living room underneath as a separate communal space.

The room is shared with another renter who also lives in a loft, though theirs boasts ‘it’s own coach and chill out space underneath’.
