The Real Story Behind Billy Joel’s Financial Losses

In the glitz and glamour of his peak fame, Billy Joel faced a financial nightmare that few could have imagined. The renowned “Piano Man” discovered that his long-time confidant and manager, Frank Weber, had been siphoning off his hard-earned wealth. In September 1989, Joel took the legal plunge, suing Weber for a staggering $90 million. This lawsuit demanded $30 million in compensatory damages for what Joel believed were mismanaged funds over the years, alongside a hefty $60 million in punitive damages. But this tale of betrayal was further complicated by family ties—Weber was not only Joel’s manager but also his former brother-in-law. He was the sibling of Elizabeth Weber, Joel’s first wife, from whom he had separated in 1982, yet Weber continued to guide Joel’s career until the dramatic fallout in 1989.

The accusations against Frank Weber painted a troubling picture: allegations of using Joel’s finances for dubious horse-breeding ventures, real estate schemes, and even billing his client twice for the same services. Fraudulent financial documentation was just the tip of the iceberg. This was a harsh revelation for Joel, who had once entrusted Weber to such an extent that he named him the godfather of his daughter. “He had such deep trust in Weber that he named him godfather of his daughter,” Leonard Marks, Joel’s attorney, revealed during the period, as reported by UPI. Eventually, the two reached a confidential settlement after Frank was compelled to file for bankruptcy.

Years after these turbulent events, the “New York State of Mind” creator reflected on how this betrayal became an inadvertent chapter in his musical journey. “For a long time, I was overly sensitive to this accusation that I was a hitmaker-meister just grinding it out for the money,” Joel confessed to The Washington Post in October 1993. With an ironic tone, he admitted, “So I proved I wasn’t doing it for the money because I didn’t know nothing about my money.” The gravity of his financial woes only became apparent after his marriage to Christie Brinkley.

Christie Brinkley was suspicious of Billy Joel’s manager

Billy Joel became intertwined with his former manager Frank Weber when he married Elizabeth Weber. The former couple was married from 1973 until 1982, and it was at the end of their marriage that the “Vienna” singer became suspicious of his soon-to-be ex. While their marriage was on the outs, he had a devastating motorcycle accident that damaged his hands. Joel was visited in the hospital by Elizabeth, who brought papers for him to sign over his assets. “I may have acted like an idiot a time or two, but I’m not a complete idiot. That really killed it right there and then,” he said in the book “Billy Joel: The Definitive Biography” (via Page Six).

Following his separation from Elizabeth, Joel tied the knot with supermodel Christie Brinkley in 1985. As their marriage progressed, it was Brinkley who unveiled the devastating truth: Frank Weber was misusing Joel’s funds for personal investments in horses and real estate. “I said to Billy, ‘Frank Weber’s ripping you off.’ And he did not want to hear that,” Brinkley shared candidly in the 2025 documentary “Billy Joel: And So It Goes, Brinkley” (via People). Joel recounted his anger and revelation in the documentary, stating, “When I found out that my money was pretty well-spent, I was furious. I realized I gotta start all over again, go right back to writing new songs, recording new songs, and hit the road to try to earn it all back.”

Sadly, the relentless demand to tour and recoup his finances took a toll on Joel’s marriage with Brinkley. The pressures and distance created under these circumstances added strain, eventually leading to their divorce in 1994, five years after Joel’s legal battle with his once-trusted manager began.
