The Great British Bakeoff is easily a staple for comfort reality TV shows. The English-born Netflix baking competition is wholesome despite its weekly eliminations, and contestants often grow quite close to one another while working in the colorful text.
For lucky participants, if they do well enough in the competition, they may also be able to spin off an independent baking career after the show. One former winner, however, seems to have made his living in a much more surprising way.
Former GBBO Winner John Whaite Made Money Off OF
John Whaite was crowned the winner of GBBO Season 3 back in 2012. When John entered the competition, he was in the middle of law school at the University of Manchester, and he even joked he was preparing both for baking challenges and his finals. John became the youngest winner in the show’s history at just 23-years-old.
After the show, however, he began to make money in a different way. On her personal Instagram page, he opened up about how he’d started to post nude photos of himself on platform OF and begun to make much more there than through baking. To satisfy fans’ curiosity, John disclosed how much he was able to rake in from doing so:
Some people think that I made millions from OF, some people think I made nothing. The truth is that in 11 months I turned over $270,000, so it can be a very lucrative platform, a very lucrative enterprise.
John Is Leaving The Platform To Return To Baking
That said, it seems that John is now going back to his love for baking. He’s decided to fully dedicate himself to his baking business, Ruff Puff Bakehouse and Ruff Puff Brownies. In another post on his Instagram page, John posted a photo of himself lying on the couch with his dog, paired with a heartfelt caption explaining his reason for leaving the platform:
I’m leaving OF. Life has shifted in a way I couldn’t have predicted — Ruff Puff Bakehouse and Ruff Puff Brownies have taken up so much of my time, but in the best possible way. They’ve reminded me of a talent I’d neglected, and given me a new respect for the craft that first set me on this path all those years ago.
Working side by side with the team, creating something real and lasting, has shown me that my value isn’t in muscles or body image — it’s in building, baking, and sharing. For the first time since Bake Off 13 years ago, I feel a true sense of purpose again. This isn’t the end of something, it’s the start of a new chapter — one rooted in passion, creativity, and community. And I couldn’t be more ready.
“To all the OF fans and peers – thank you for the support along the way. I wish you all well and much success. ❤️ I’m not Jonny Boy, I’m just John, and I’m putting one foot in front of the other just like the rest of the world,” John wrote.
“It’s difficult, it’s about marketing and catching people’s eyes, and giving them a reason to subscribe. I have a lot of respect for the people who are successful at OF, but to me, I’m not really money-driven like that. I find much more fulfillment in working with my team of people at Ruff Puff Bakehouse,” he added.
The latest season of GBBO is currently airing on Netflix.
