UK Childhood May Secure Archie & Lilibet’s Royal Titles Against Prince William’s Plans

In a surprising twist of events, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced plans to return to the United Kingdom by September 2026. Despite initial reactions of disbelief, Brittany Provance, Editor-in-Chief of the Royal News Network, suggests the move aligns with recent challenges. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have faced growing financial concerns and business setbacks. Additionally, the relocation could address the royal status of their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, the siblings have held HRH titles, which might be under scrutiny.

Back in 2020, Harry and Meghan abandoned their roles as senior royals and relocated to the U.S., effectively distancing Archie and Lilibet from their British royal heritage. This arrangement has sufficed until now, but circumstances may shift with Prince William’s ascension to the throne. As the new Prince of Wales, William might not maintain the same royal benefits for non-working royals, posing a potential challenge to the children’s status. “The couple can strengthen their children’s connections to the Crown before King William’s reign, when their titles and positions may be on the chopping block,” Provance shared with Nicki Swift.

Concerns regarding their children’s titles are not unfounded. Prince William is reportedly considering reducing the monarchy’s size, possibly affecting non-active royals. This strategy aligns with King Charles III’s recent decision to limit those appearing alongside him on the Buckingham Palace balcony, favoring a more streamlined royal representation.

Prince William and Prince Harry’s feud may still cause issues

Prince William’s choice for his children to use their HRH titles underscores the significance of such designations, reflecting broader implications for Harry and Meghan. Provance notes, “As it turns out, Harry and Meghan need the monarchy more than the monarchy needed them. The question is: will they be accepted back into the fold, and will this help them as they try to relaunch?” This uncertainty adds complexity to the upcoming transition, with only time revealing its outcome. Meanwhile, the Sussexes appear to be making strategic moves for their future.

Since Harry and William’s feud is going as strong as ever, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might not be overreacting if they have concerns over Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet’s titles. “Once he was crowned as king, his brother might well show no mercy to him and Meghan,” royal reporter Tom Bower wrote in his 2026 book, “Betrayal: Power, Deceit And The Fight For The Future Of The Royal Family” (via Harper’s Bazaar). There’s no way of knowing whether William has plans to strip Archie and Lilibet’s titles, but besides the concern over his kids’ future within the monarchy, Harry has also previously expressed a desire to have Archie and Lilibet feel British, as well as American.

In a statement read during his security court case (via BBC), Harry noted that the loosened security arrangements were getting in the way of his children’s access to their roots. “The UK is my home. The UK is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home as much as where they live at the moment in the US,” he expressed in 2023. The move back should accomplish this part, at least.
