Matthew Wolfenden has issued a further update after successfully undergoing surgery. The former Emmerdale actor, who is best known for playing David Metcalfe on the ITV soap, told fans he was “all fixed” after his hospital stay.
On Tuesday (April 16) the actor announced he was due to go under the knife to repair a mysterious injury. He shared a pre-surgery update on his Instagram stories and wrote: “Ready to go down for surgery on my knee.”
In a follow-up post, shared with his 199,000 followers, Matthew, 43, could be seen wearing a hospital gown. His knee was bandaged and a GIF reading “all done!” was posted over the top of the image.
In a fresh update, the father-of-three has since revealed the extent of his injury. He wrote: “Repair to menuscus, patella tendon and cartilage damage all done. (sic)
“Took two hours instead of the 45 mins they initially thought! Can’t tell you how amazing everything and everyone was at Harrogate District Hospital! Thank you.”
Due to the surgery being a success, it appears that Matthew has been allowed to leave the Harrogate-based institution.
On Tuesday night, he uploaded another picture to social media – this time a full-length shot of himself standing in the hospital foyer.
The star was seen wearing grey sweats, a backwards cap and a pair of cream sliders.
The hem of his shorts was rolled up so that his bandage was on display and he smiled on a pair of crutches.
In overlay text, the former Dancing on Ice star claimed he was “all fixed”. He then issued a thank you note to barre instructor Heather Scott-Martin. “Thanks @hscottmartin for picking me up and playing nurse this week!”
Fans of Matthew will best know the West Yorkshire native as David Metcalfe – an Emmerdale regular between 2006 and 2023.
David is the son of Eric Pollard (played by Chris Chittell) and Lydia Metcalfe. He first appeared in the Dales in search of his biological father.
During his time on the show, David experienced a slew of dramatic storylines, including his son Theo (Beau Newton) arriving in his life as a surprise on Christmas Day.
However, Matthew shocked fans last year when he announced he was stepping away from Emmerdale after 18 years.
At the time of the departure reveal, the soap star said: “I’m so nervous about leaving, almost two decades. It feels like the right time. The door’s left open, they’re not killing me off, I’ve been promised. I’m allowed to tell you that. So who knows, I might be back, we will see,”
“I met my wife on the show, we’ve had three kids. Not only has it given me 18 years of an amazing job, it’s given me family. So to leave it, it’s been a big, big part of my life.”
Matthew was previously married to Debbie Dingle actress Charley Webb between 2018 and 2023.

Late last year, the former couple announced their decision to separate after five years of marriage.
In November 2023, both Matthew and Charley, 36, released similar statements that read: “It is with love and respect that Matthew and I have decided to separate.
“We remain friends and our priority is the love for our children. For their sake we would appreciate privacy at this time.”
