In a headline-grabbing on-stage moment, R&B superstar Usher asked a fan to exit the stage after she appeared unenthusiastic about his signature dance moves.
The incident unfolded during Usher’s R&B Tour performance on Friday, July 24, in Nashville. The singer, famous for his “U Got It Bad” hit, brought a female fan from the audience into the spotlight, as captured in fan footage later circulated on Instagram.
The video features the shirt-free Usher, 47, who is currently co-headlining the tour with Chris Brown. He is seen crooning to the fan while perched on a bed. As the performance escalates, Usher leans in for a more intimate moment, trying to nuzzle the fan’s neck, to which she responds by stiffly reclining onto the bed.
Usher, whose full name is Usher Raymond IV, attempts to increase the proximity by directing his face towards hers, yet is met with a silent and unmoved participant. As he lifts his gaze to meet hers, he briefly locks eyes, then pivots towards the audience with a perplexed look etched across his face.
“I don’t think she wants to be on the stage,” the singer then says before walking away from the bed, removing his two ear pieces and shaking his hand at the bed in a gesture for her to leave the stage altogether.
The awkward moment drew mixed responses from fans who took to the post’s comments section to offer their takes. “Why would she go up there then?” posed one fan, while another wrote, “I respect her.”
Another social media user commented on Usher’s reaction during the moment, summing it up as, “She killed his ego a little bit, bro ain’t used to that.”
Usher and Brown, 37, announced their tour in April, sharing a joint Instagram post that declared it was “time.” The announcement attracted backlash due to Brown’s legal issues over the years, which included allegations of abuse against women. (Brown pleaded guilty to the felony assault of his 2009 girlfriend Rihanna, serving five years of probation.)
Brown addressed the backlash in an Instagram Story shared on April 26. “The funniest and the weirdest s*** ever to me is the fact that poeple [sic] have the option to come to my tour and the option not to,” he wrote at the time. “I know everyone who is a fan of me and USHER will definitely be in the building and it will be PACKED just like last year.”
