Yellowstone Drama: Dutton Ranch Turmoil Reportedly Escalates

The drama around “Dutton Ranch” may not be limited to what viewers see on screen. Executive producer Taylor Sheridan and series lead Cole Hauser, who stars as Rip Wheeler, are reportedly at odds in a simmering Texas-sized feud that insiders claim has been building for years. The Paramount+ spinoff debuted in May to major interest, drawing a record 12.9 million global views in its first seven days — the streamer’s best launch for an original series. But despite that momentum, tensions between Hauser and Sheridan allegedly came close to turning physical, according to the Daily Mail. Hauser himself previously hinted that sparks flew early on, telling Men’s Journal in 2022 that he and Sheridan got into an argument the second time they ever met.

Hauser did not explain what caused that early confrontation, and whatever happened seemed to be resolved quickly enough for the two to keep collaborating — and, at times, appear close. Still, recent claims suggest friction has continued beneath the surface. One insider told the Daily Mail that while filming “Yellowstone,” the pair “almost got into a fist fight,” adding that they “butted heads big time because they are so different” before eventually moving past the short-lived clash. The source framed the tension as a personality mismatch, describing Sheridan as “a harsh Texas guy” who is direct, quick-thinking and sometimes “brutal” in his delivery, while calling Hauser “more casual” and “more surfer dude.”

Notably, in July, the “Yellowstone” sequel’s leading man admitted to FilmInside that Taylor Sheridan’s absence from the “Dutton Ranch” set ripped up the “normality” for Cole Hauser. Apparently, his comments weren’t taken lightly by Sheridan. As a source explained to the Daily Mail, “Whether Cole knew it or not, he was sounding an alarm that told the world that there were problems on ‘Dutton Ranch,’ and that was not appreciated.” Notably, co-lead Kelly Reilly teased that Sheridan will be more involved in Season 2 of “Dutton Ranch,” which will be a big shift for the series, and should hopefully ease some of Hauser’s complaints. The two men also entered a caffeinated legal battle in 2023 after Sheridan’s coffee brand, Bosque Ranch, filed a lawsuit against Hauser’s Free Rein for “trademark infringement, unfair competition and false advertising,” per People. They settled in 2024.

Some Hollywood insiders believe the alleged strain may also be tied to Sheridan’s own history as an actor. A source claimed to the Daily Mail that Sheridan “might sometimes be hard on actors” because he initially came to Hollywood hoping to perform but “didn’t get very far.” Sheridan ultimately built his career as a writer and producer, co-creating “Yellowstone” and expanding the franchise into a television powerhouse, but the source speculated that Hauser’s ease on camera could still sting. The insider described Hauser as “a natural,” praising his looks, timing and ability to play a hero, before adding, “I wouldn’t doubt it if Taylor was jealous of Cole.” Sheridan’s forceful creative style has reportedly factored into other tensions as well, including the firing of showrunner Chad Feehan — another notable “Dutton Ranch” shake-up that has fueled talk of off-camera turmoil.
