Zoe Ball recently opened up about a shared diagnosis that has significantly impacted her household dynamics. In a candid discussion on the “Dig It” podcast with her friend Jo Whiley, Zoe disclosed that both she and her children have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a revelation that has brought both chaos and understanding to their home life.

The talk show host mentioned that her lodger has been instrumental in bringing a sense of calm and order to their otherwise hectic environment. “I often talk about having ADHD,” Zoe remarked, explaining that her awareness of the condition only truly dawned on her after her teenage daughter Nell was diagnosed. This personal revelation aligns her with the estimated 5% of the population who live with ADHD.

Discussing Nell’s situation, Zoe shared that her daughter, who she co-parents with her former husband, DJ Norman Cook, is currently on medication to help manage her symptoms. “It’s really helped her to focus,” Zoe noted, highlighting the positive impact the treatment has had on Nell’s ability to concentrate.

Through understanding her children’s experiences with ADHD, Zoe has gained insights into her own challenges with the condition, which she describes as leading to “carnage and the mess” in her life. This understanding has been eye-opening for Zoe, who has been speculated as a possible new host for “Strictly Come Dancing.”

Reflecting on how ADHD affects her daily routine, Zoe admitted that she only feels compelled to organize her home when it reaches a state of disarray. “I can be like a whirlwind,” she admitted, emphasizing her need for order amidst the chaos. However, with ADHD, she finds herself easily sidetracked, making it difficult to maintain structure without reaching a breaking point first.

She revealed that her 25-year-old son Woody also has ADHD, which can lead to the three of them having quite a chaotic home life. Zoe went on: ā€œThere’s three ADHD-ers … three quite gregarious people… and then there’s the lodger who’s quite ordered and very regimented. That’s the way he survives and he gets through his stuff.

“He’s bought a bit of calm and order into this house of chaos. Which I never realised would be so appreciated. I’m like ā€˜Thank you. Thank you for bringing calm and and order into a house of chaos because it makes such a difference’.ā€

But despite finding help for Woody and Nell, and appreciating the additional stability that their lodger brings, Zoe admitted that she still struggles from time to time. She continued: ā€œIt can be really tough… I think if you have ADHD you take things so personally and so to heart and those extremes of emotions can be quite hard to handle sometimes.ā€

She added that her notorious party reputation during the 1990s had probably been driven by her undiagnosed ADHD. She recalled: “I would never let anyone leave the party. This is probably why I partied probably for 10 years too long. and I just hated the party being over and I hated everybody leaving. And then I would see Woody. Woody would cry when people left to go home, even when he was little.ā€

She added that her daughter is very bright, but being so strong-willed makes her hard to manage sometimes: ā€œI love my daughter so much, she’s amazing. She’s sassy as hell and I know she’s going to be okay out there in the big wide world, because she’s strong-willed and she’s tough.

ā€œBut, oh lordy, there is no telling her! I think her brother was the same when he was young. As a mum, you have to work out different ways of approaching things.ā€
