Desmonda Cathabel is an Indonesian actress and contestant on ITV’s Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream. She is best known for her role as Princess Jasmine in the UK Tour of Disney’s Aladdin. According to InterTalent, her theatre credits include Alternate Kim in Miss Saigon (Sheffield Crucible) and Lorene in From Here To Eternity at the Charing Cross Theatre.
Desmonda is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music. In 2022, she was named the Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year. She was crowned at the end of a hotly contested West End sing-off final – the first since the passing of legendary composer Stephen Sondheim – fittingly, in the Sondheim Theatre. The £1000 first prize was donated by Sondheim Society member Tessa Kulik, in memory of her husband Mark Jones.
Desmonda grew up in Indonesia, where she says there is no musical theatre training, before travelling to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music.
She told the West End Theatre: “As someone coming from a faraway country to pursue an impossible dream of musical theatre and having English as a second language, I used to be extremely doubtful that I had what it takes to do it. But being selected to this final, doing Sondheim’s work – which is famously hard to do – I am now more confident that I’m good enough to do what I love to do and be able to convey the stories that I want to convey through my performance.”
Her credits while training include Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends Gala at the Sondheim Theatre, and in Maria Friedman and Friends at the Menier Chocolate Factory.

Created by Judy Craymer, who created and produced the Mamma Mia! movie and musical, the reality TV series will follow 14 musical theatre hopefuls battle it out for the chance to win the lead roles of Sophie and Sky in the West End production of Mamma Mia.
The musical theatre reality TV show is hosted by BBC Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball and features four professional judges including comedian Alan Carr and West End star Samantha Bark.
