Judge Scott Sprouse Biography
R. Scott Sprouse serves as a circuit court judge in South Carolina’s Tenth Judicial Circuit, having been elected by the South Carolina General Assembly on May 28, 2014. He took over from the retiring Judge Alex Macaulay.
Born in 1964 in Scottsboro, Alabama, Judge Sprouse spent his formative years in Greenville County. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from Clemson University in December 1985 and proceeded to obtain his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1989.
Career
Judge Sprouse launched his legal career in the fall of 1989 as an associate at an insurance defense law firm. In April 1990, he relocated to Oconee County, where he established a long-standing private practice. He became part of the firm Ross, Stoudemire, Ballenger and Sprouse in July 1992, which later evolved into Stoudemire and Sprouse, maintaining his focus on diverse civil and criminal cases in state courts. Moreover, he served as the City Attorney for Westminster for over two decades.
His judicial journey began with his role as a Hearing Officer for the South Carolina Alcohol Beverage Control Commission in 1993 and 1994. Subsequently, in 1996, he was appointed as the Municipal Judge for the City of Walhalla and later for the Town of Salem in 2011, holding both positions until he ascended to the circuit bench. On May 28, 2014, Judge Sprouse was elected to the Circuit Court, Seat Two, in the Tenth Judicial Circuit, completing the term left by the retiring Judge Alexander S. Macaulay.

Judge Sprouse is affiliated with numerous professional organizations, including the South Carolina Bar, the Oconee County Bar, the American Association for Justice, the South Carolina Association for Justice, and the South Carolina Summary Court Judges Association. Additionally, he is authorized to practice in the Federal District Court for the District of South Carolina.

Judge Sprouse is the son of Bobby J. Sprouse and Dorothy Bridges Sprouse. He is married to the former Mary Roddey Stoudemire. They have two children, Robert Ward and John Pegram.
