Who is Latto?
American rapper and singer Alyssa Michelle Stephens, who is known by the stage name Latto or Big Latto. She was born on December 22, 1998 in Columbus, Ohio in the United States of America. Her parents are Misti Pitts and Shayne Stephens. She was educated at Lovejoy High School in Clayton County, Georgia. Latto credits Clayton County as where she gained her street cred.
Being “light-skinned”, she was bullied by her friends and other students at school, which was the main reason why she took the name Miss Mulatto during the early days of her rap career. Later in her career she dropped the name to Latto. At the age of 10, she decided to become a rapper and then started writing her own rap songs. Before she got into music, she competed in drag racing.
In 2016, Latto, then known as Miss Mulatto, competed on Jermaine Dupri’s TV series The Rap Game. She was declared the winner among the crowd of contestants, but then turned down the recording contract that resulted from the win. In 2019, she released the single “Bitch from da Souf”. This single gave her recognition and a contract with RCA Records.
The song was a surprising success, entering the Billboard Hot 100 in August 2020, peaking at number 95. Rappers Saweetie and Trina participated in the remix of the song. In 2020, Latto released the follow-up single “Muwop” (featuring Gucci Mane). Both songs were certified platinum and appeared on Latto’s debut album Queen of da Souf, which was released in August 2020.
Latto’s big hit and breakthrough came when she released “Big Energy” from her album 777 in 2022. The song peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100, her highest-charting single to date. For this performance, she was nominated for Best New Hip Hop Artist at the 2020 BET Hip Hop Awards and Best Rap Female Artist at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards.
Latto was part of the XXL freshman class of 2020. In February 2021, she was named Push Artist of the MTV Global in February 2021 and won the BET Award for Best New Artist of 2022. Latto received nominations for Best New Artist, Video For Good, and best hip hop at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. “Big Energy” won Song of the Year and 777 was nominated for Hip Hop Album of the Year at the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards. She was nominated for the 2023 Grammy Awards for Best New Artist.
