Memphis’ shooting rate has become a source of concern as the city faces an increase in violent crime. According to recent figures, Memphis’ violent crime rate has surpassed a 17-year high, with murders climbing by 35%. What is particularly concerning is that weapons are used in 73% of these violent crimes. This increase in violence calls into question the effectiveness of existing crime-fighting measures, which emphasise increased police presence and harsher penalties. Alternative options, such as changing the Juvenile Court’s detention policy and instituting restorative justice or more intensive community supervision, according to the chair of the Shelby County Crime Commission, should be examined. The current mayor’s efforts to minimise crime have clearly failed, with a 34% spike in violent crime and a startling 72% rise in property crime since his election.
