A chilling testimony from a New York resident has resulted in the imprisonment of his former friend, who subjected him to a terrifying ordeal of kidnapping and torture.
Shah Powell, aged 36, faced conviction last month for the abduction and brutal torture of Jhomiel Brown. This conviction comes two years after Powell held Brown captive in a shed located in DeWitt, a town in upstate New York. During the trial, Brown recounted the harrowing experiences he endured at the hands of Powell.
According to Syracuse.com, during his court testimony, Brown shared that on September 24, 2023, Powell assaulted him using metal poles, bit him, and inflicted burns with cigarettes. While Brown was unconscious, Powell bound his wrists to his ankles using duct tape.
Among the most shocking revelations was Brown’s account of Powell extracting his two front teeth with pliers. In what Brown described as a “grotesque moment of necessity,” he managed to obtain one of his dislodged teeth and used it to cut through the duct tape, ultimately leading to his escape.
Powell, who testified in his defense, claimed that Brown’s injuries were the result of a fistfight stemming from a drug-related dispute. However, prosecutors accused him of providing false testimony under oath.
Before sentencing, prosecutors stated that Powell was “a man who was not at all prepared to accept what he did to another human being.” When Powell heard the guilty verdict against him, he “lost his cool” and punched a wall.
Before going to trial, Powell rejected a plea deal that would have sentenced him to 10 years in prison. His defense attorneys asked the judge not to impose a longer sentence because he opted to go to trial. The judge was unmoved by the request, saying, “This sentence is not punishing Mr. Powell for going to trial. It is punishing Mr. Powell for the completely barbaric assault on Mr. Brown.”
Powell was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
