The verdict is in for Rex Heuermann, the man behind the notorious Gilgo Beach serial murders.
Previously known as a Manhattan architect, Heuermann faced the courtroom on June 17, receiving a sentence of several life terms without parole. This follows his guilty plea earlier in the year for multiple murders, which had remained unsolved for years, leaving Long Island and the rest of the nation in shock.
During the proceedings in Suffolk County court, family members of the victims gave heartfelt statements before Judge Timothy Mazzei delivered his judgment.
Prior to the sentencing, Judge Mazzei inquired if the 62-year-old had any final remarks.
“I have nothing to say,” Heuermann responded, as reported by NBC News. “Any words from me would be meaningless.”
He also apologized for killing his victims, including Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello, Megan Waterman, Sandra Costilla, and Valerie Mack, per NBC News. The judge did not mince words in his response.
“You are a disgusting, despicable and small man,” the judge told him, according to the outlet. “And you are a coward.”
Rex Heuermann Pleaded Guilty To Multiple Murders
Heuermann pleaded guilty in April to seven counts of murder and admitted to causing the death of an eighth woman, per a press release from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
As part of the plea deal, he was not charged in connection with Karen Vergata’s 1996 death, according to the press release
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the Gilgo Beach Homicide Task Force developed Heuermann as a suspect in March 2022 and investigated him for 16 months before his July 2023 arrest an indictment.
During his guilty plea, Heurmann admitted to hiring the women as escorts, per The New York Times, using burner phones to make contact and then killing them and then dumping the bodies along Ocean Parkway.
The shocking admissions brought an end to a mystery that had remained unsolved for more than a decade and left numerous families searching for answers.
District Attorney Delivers Message To Victims’ Families
Following the sentencing, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney addressed reporters outside the courthouse and spoke directly about the families who spent years fighting for justice.
“I want them to wreak their revenge by going on and having great lives,” Tierney said. “By being happy, by being fulfilled, by being satisfied that they stood by their loved ones and did a wonderful job and now it’s time for them to heal.”
