Last week, a postal service driver found himself under arrest after an alarming attempt to run over a 10-year-old boy, whom he mistakenly believed to be a “porch pirate.”
The young boy, residing at a house where a package had been mistakenly delivered, was in fact trying to return the package to its rightful owner, a neighbor, according to WKRG.
Authorities have charged 41-year-old William White Jr. with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, theft, and criminal mischief.
“This isn’t just a simple, ‘Oops,’ crash with a 10-year-old in the road,” Florida Highway Patrol Capt. Jason King told WEAR. “This is an intentional act by a United States postal worker.”
As per a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, the boy hopped onto his electric scooter to deliver the package to the correct address after White had mistakenly left it at the wrong one, the Pensacola News Journal reported. However, White misinterpreted the boy’s actions as theft and aggressively drove towards him, colliding with the scooter.
The report detailed that “White then deliberately directed the USPS vehicle at the child and ran over the scooter,” but fortunately, the child managed to escape to a nearby yard just before his scooter was struck.
White then yelled at the boy, took the scooter out from under his vehicle, and put it inside before driving away. A member of the boy’s family followed and confronted White, who threw the scooter into a yard.
The incident took place on December 27. White was interviewed four days later and arrested.
In a statement, USPS said it “”takes the safety and well-being of our customers and employees seriously” and said it was investigating “in partnership with local law enforcement” but declined further comment.
