Gainesville Man Arrested After Rape Allegation, Nude-Photo Threat

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Javier Yadiel Copra Santiago, 22, was arrested and charged in connection with two separate cases involving allegations of forcible rape or sexual battery and extortion, according to law enforcement reports.

First incident

A Gainesville Police Department officer reported that Copra Santiago went to the first victim’s apartment on September 15 to pick her up for work. The woman told police that she and Copra Santiago considered themselves friends and had previously engaged in sexual relations.

According to the report, Copra Santiago wanted to spend time with the woman before taking her to work, but she refused, leading to an argument. She said he put her in a chokehold until she lost consciousness. After she woke up, she told officers, he bound her wrists with two black zip ties and threatened her with pliers. The woman said she feared he intended to torture or kill her.

The victim said Copra Santiago eventually removed the restraints, forced her to perform oral sex, ordered her to stand and photographed her. She said he then told her to get on the bed and raped her. Afterward, he drove her to work, where she went to a secluded location and contacted police.

She told investigators that none of the sexual acts were consensual. The woman also said Copra Santiago referred to himself as a “rapist” after the alleged assault and told her he did not expect to see her again because he had raped her.

Investigators reportedly found two cleanly cut black zip ties in the woman’s bedroom, along with a used condom.

The report states that Copra Santiago later texted the woman several times, asking to speak with her. She did not reply until officers were present and monitoring the exchange. When she told him she did not want to meet because he had raped her, he allegedly responded, “I have no clue what you’re talking about I gave you a ride to work that’s it” and called the allegation “a big accusation.” He continued asking to speak with her “face to face.”

After being read his Miranda rights, Copra Santiago reportedly denied having sexual contact with the woman other than kissing her once while his wife was present. He said he had only been inside her apartment when helping her move in roughly a year earlier, denied seeing her at any point in September 2026 and said he had not driven her to work. He told investigators he did not know why she would accuse him of rape, then declined to answer additional questions.

Second incident

In a separate case, an Alachua County Sheriff’s deputy reported that the second victim contacted authorities on September 23 after receiving threatening messages from an unfamiliar phone number. The sender allegedly threatened to post nude photographs of her on Facebook and share them with her family. She told investigators that she believed the images had been taken from her own phone.

The messages proposed a deal: If the woman sent additional photographs, the sender would “disappear like poof [dust cloud emoji].” Other messages allegedly read, “No exposing no embarrassment when u try to go to the police for a fake number,” and, “Aight it’s all up online by tomorrow they’ll be on Facebook too and instagram and Snapchat [shrug emoji].”

The woman told deputies she suspected Copra Santiago because he lived nearby and had previously borrowed her phone. She said that during the call, he returned to his apartment and was away for at least 40 minutes.

Copra Santiago initially said he had remained near the woman while making the call, but later acknowledged returning to his apartment and being gone for about 20 minutes. He denied sending her the threatening messages. When shown screenshots, he reportedly claimed they had been fabricated. He also said investigators would not find photographs of the woman on his phone. The device was seized during his arrest, although the report does not indicate whether it had been examined beforehand.

Charges and bail

Copra Santiago faces charges of forcible rape and extortion, according to the arrest information. The Gainesville Police Department report says he was born in Puerto Rico and is a U.S. citizen with no prior criminal history. Judge Meshon Rawls ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on the State Attorney’s Office request to keep him jailed without bail through trial. If that request is denied, the judge will set bail at the hearing.
