Gypsy Rose Blanchard has issued an apology following her participation in a TikTok video that sparked controversy for seemingly making light of her mother’s 2015 death.

On Saturday, influencer Natalie Reynolds posted a video of her and Rose, 34, participating in a TikTok trend called “We listen and we don’t judge.” Rose was filmed saying how she went to prison before gesturing an X sign with her hands, mimicking a choking sound, and saying “…my own mom.”

Blanchard, who spent nearly eight years incarcerated, had orchestrated a plan with her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to murder her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Dee Dee reportedly suffered from Munchausen by proxy syndrome, manifesting in years of abuse during which she forced her daughter to use a wheelchair and undergo unnecessary medical treatments. Prior to the tragic event, Dee Dee allegedly isolated Gypsy and restrained her to prevent escape.

In a conversation with TMZ, Blanchard, now free since 2023, acknowledged the backlash over the video, admitting that it might have been perceived as trivializing her mother’s death. She explained that the idea for the TikTok trend was hers, highlighting the shared controversial histories between her and her collaborator, Reynolds.

“The intention was to showcase accountability and growth,” she expressed, reflecting on the negative reception. “Regrettably, it wasn’t interpreted as we had hoped.”

Blanchard further clarified that the X gesture seen in the video was meant to prevent TikTok from censoring the content, rather than to make light of her mother’s demise.

“I thought I could frame it in a way…but I thought it could be a creative way to own past mistakes and take accountability,” she said.
