In a startling incident of road rage in Hawthorne, Florida, 64-year-old Allen Duane Miller found himself behind bars, accused of brandishing a firearm at another driver during a heated confrontation. This alarming event unfolded on January 23 and was swiftly addressed by the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.
That evening, around 6:23 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the 6005 block of U.S. Highway 301 following reports of a road rage altercation. The victim recounted a tense encounter that began on Lake Susan Road, where an SUV, driven by Miller, abruptly brake-checked him. The situation escalated when both vehicles turned north onto U.S. Highway 301.
According to the victim, as they drove alongside one another—Miller in the right lane and the victim in the left—Miller rolled down his window and began shouting. The verbal exchange quickly turned sour, with both parties hurling expletives before continuing down the road. The confrontation reached its peak at an intersection, where the victim alleged that Miller brandished a black handgun, leaving him in fear for his life.
The situation took another turn when Miller, upon learning of a social media post detailing the incident, reportedly reached out to law enforcement. During this interaction, he allegedly admitted, “I lifted my hand up so that he knew I had a gun.”
After Miller heard there was a Facebook post about the incident, he reportedly contacted law enforcement and said, “I lifted my hand up so that he knew I had a gun.”
Miller reportedly said the victim’s car drove up close behind him on Lake Susan Road, so he pumped the brakes, and the victim’s car came closer. He said he felt threatened, so he took his handgun from his pocket and placed it on his lap. He said that after both cars turned onto U.S. Hwy 301, they exchanged expletives and kept driving. At the next stop, he said he picked up his handgun with his left hand to show the victim that he was armed, but he said he pointed it at the top of the windshield, not at the victim. He reportedly said the victim never threatened to hurt, shoot, or kill him.
Miller has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has no criminal history, and Judge Susanne Wilson Bullard set bail at $20,000.
