GAINESVILLE, Fla. – John Joseph Daniels, aged 47, found himself under arrest on serious charges of rape after allegedly assaulting a woman who had been seeking shelter for the night.

The incident unfolded near NW 13th Street’s 2900 block when the victim crossed paths with Daniels. She recounted to Gainesville Police that Daniels extended an offer for her to stay in his tent. However, once inside, the situation took a dire turn. She claimed Daniels initiated unwanted physical contact, despite her clear refusal to participate in any sexual activity. According to her, the assault escalated as he forcibly raped her and choked her, ignoring her desperate pleas to stop. She also recalled threats to her life, as he warned her to remain silent under the threat of death, with knives visibly present in the tent, though no direct threat was made using them.

In a courageous move, the woman managed to flee once Daniels ceased his assault. Seeking refuge, she entered a nearby fast food restaurant, hoping to use a phone. Unfortunately, she claimed the staff denied her request. While still in the restaurant, Daniels reportedly entered, prompting her to publicly confront him about the rape. His response was dismissive, resorting to insults before she wisely sought safety in another establishment, where he did not pursue her.

Adding to the severity of this case, police records reveal Daniels’ troubling past, marked by a history of violence. This includes previous crimes such as sexual battery on a child and lewd or lascivious molestation. Notably, he faced a sexual battery charge in 2007, which was ultimately not pursued by the victim at that time.

The officer also noted that Daniels is a suspect in two sexual batteries in Gainesville in 2025, both of which occurred in the wooded areas behind two different area businesses.

Although the victim did not know Daniels’ identity, she reportedly identified him in a photo lineup, and an uninvolved witness reportedly said that the tent where the sexual battery occurred belongs to Daniels.

Daniels was arrested later on Thursday in the 2500 block of NW 13th Street.

Daniels has been charged with sexual battery with a physically helpless victim. His full criminal history is unavailable, but he has served six state prison sentences out of Charlotte, DeSoto, and Levy counties, with his most recent release in 2024. He is being held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
