A resident told KNBC that the trash can was put on his property. He reportedly moved it to the street, unaware there was a body inside.

“Saw that it was a trash can tipped over on its face and I could smell something not right right away,” he explained.

The resident claimed the trash can smelled, was zip-tied, and the serial number was scratched off. He reportedly called the police and sanitation about the trash can, leading to the discovery of Haas’ body.

According to KNBC, investigators said the body was severely decomposed. KABC reported that the body was inside a Burton snowboarding bag.

Officials have not disclosed how Haas died. The case remains under investigation.
