A New York woman’s birthday celebration in Jamaica ended tragically, leading to the arrest of her husband.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force announced on May 16 that Dane Watson has been detained and is now considered a “person of interest” following the April 29 death of his wife, Melissa Kerry Samnath. Details were shared in a statement from the police.
Melissa, an accountant, had journeyed to Jamaica to mark her birthday with Watson, whom she had met online and who resides in Jamaica.
Earlier police communications revealed that the couple had tied the knot in December, as noted in a prior statement.
The celebration took a tragic turn when Watson reportedly left Melissa at Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James and subsequently disappeared. She was later declared deceased.
The celebratory trip quickly took a dark turn, however, after police said Watson dropped her at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James and then fled the facility. She was later pronounced dead.
A May 6 post mortem examination concluded that she died “as the result of multiple blunt force trauma to the head,” police said.
Although police listed her age as 35, her obituary referred to her as being 37 at the time of her death.
Samnath’s family told The Jamaica Gleaner that the same day she arrived on the island she sent a cryptic WhatsApp message just before 11 p.m. saying, “I need you to call the cops. … Look at my location … It is a pink house.”
It was the last time they heard from her. They learned of her death in a phone call from Watson’s mother, the outlet reported.
Samnath’s niece—who the publication referred to by the pseudonym Janice Wynter—helped authorities identify her body.
“She didn’t deserve that,” Wynter told the outlet, adding that Samnath had been “one of the most loving persons ever.”
Dane Watson Surrendered to Police Without Incident
The investigation into her death remains ongoing. Although Watson has not been formally charged, he has been named a person of interest by police, who said he willingly surrendered with the help of his family.
“We received information that Watson was willing to surrender, but was fearful about his safety,” St. Mary Police Division Commanding Officer Anthony Wallace told The Gleaner. “Following coordination between the police and family members, Watson was safely escorted to the Gayle Police Station, where he was formally handed over to investigators without incident.”
Melissa Kerry Samnath Remembered By Loved Ones
In the aftermath of her death, Samnath’s family remembered her on GoFundMe as “a strong, loving, and unforgettable woman whose warmth touched everyone around her.”
“She loved traveling, exploring new places, and spending time with the people she cared for most,” her family continued. “Her loss has left a deep pain in our family that words cannot fully express.”
They added that the family had been “incredibly grateful for the love, support, and compassion that has already been shown during this heartbreaking time” and asked that others remembered Samnath for the gifts she brought to the world.
“Please continue to keep Melissa and our family in your thoughts and prayers,” they added, “as we celebrate her life and cherish the memories she gave us.”
