Orlando Man Charged in August Hammer Attack at Jonesville Park

JONESVILLE, Fla. — Sebastian Danel Fernandez-Matayoshi, a 24-year-old Orlando man, is facing aggravated battery and burglary with battery charges after authorities say he struck a man with a hammer at Jonesville Park in August. He is also accused in a separate burglary case dating to January 2024.

According to an Alachua County Sheriff’s deputy’s report, the alleged confrontation began after the victim went to a bar with a woman. The victim and Fernandez-Matayoshi reportedly argued about the woman before she left the bar with Fernandez-Matayoshi.

Around 4 a.m. on Aug. 8, the woman contacted the victim and arranged to meet him at Jonesville Park, located at 14100 NW 32nd Avenue. She told him she wanted to retrieve cocaine from a car. While the two were sitting inside the victim’s vehicle, Fernandez-Matayoshi allegedly approached and attempted to strike the victim with a hammer. After the victim exited the car, authorities say Fernandez-Matayoshi hit him several more times before leaving the park with the woman.

The deputy reported that the victim suffered one laceration requiring two stitches and another injury that was treated with a bandage.

Fernandez-Matayoshi has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and burglary with battery. Court records indicate he has no prior criminal convictions.

He was previously arrested in early September in connection with an alleged January 2024 incident. In that case, authorities say he entered a woman’s apartment and bedroom after she had told him he was no longer welcome there. She had reportedly made that decision after Fernandez-Matayoshi allegedly pushed her to the ground earlier that evening. He posted a $15,000 bond and was released.

A warrant tied to the Jonesville Park allegations was issued about two weeks later, leading to Fernandez-Matayoshi’s arrest on Sept. 28. He told Court Services that he is a University of Central Florida student and had been in Alachua County for only one day. He was initially held without bail, but on Oct. 7, Judge Denise Ferrero rejected the State Attorney’s Office request to keep him jailed without bail and set bail at $100,000. He was released yesterday.
